i have read the message board on line breeding and am still a bit confused. (sorry). i never put any thought into line breeding till now. what i wanted to know was if i did mate my bitch and dog could i then mate a pup from the litter with  my dog (its own dad) daughter and father. is this the jist of line breeding. i thought it was always best to stear clear of inter breeding. as this is what i thought it would be father with daughter.  or have i got my wires crossed some where. please help. is ther a difference with inter breeding and line breeding or are they the same.(in a way)

Hi,
There is a fine line between in-breeding and line-breeding. In-breeding is usually considered to involve close relationships such as mother/son, father/daughter/ brother/sister, grandfather/granddaughter etc. Line-breeding involves less closely related individuals, but still with mutual ancestors three or four generations back.

In your hypothetical situation the dog would have to have no major faults that his daughter could inherit, because they would be 'doubled up' and to all extents and purposes permanently fixed when he was mated to his own offspring.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer.
:)

Line breeding are just words that mean magnifying the genes (inherited qualities) that are already there.  Line breeding isn't right or wrong, or a good or bad idea.  It's about knowing ALL the ancestors behind the dog and bitch in question so that you know both the good points and faults that you are increasing your chances of producing.
