As some of you may know, we're moving home this Saturday. All being well we should have possession of the house on Friday, so we are planning on taking Cam there for a sniff around in the evening, hiding a few tasty treats around the house and generally making it a fun experience so that when we move in for good the next day it's a little bit more familiar. Unfortunately, we won't be bring his 'bed' with us (which is an old settee, which we're chucking). Does anyone have any useful tips to suggest to help Cam settle in as quickly as possible?
Thanks
Jo
Hi Jo
I think what you have suggested is a good idea, if you can get someone to look after him while you are moving furniture around i would do .We made a big mistake in taking Zak to our new home the day we were moving, he wouldn't come out of the kitchen all day and you could tell he thought we were going to leave him.wait untill you are as straight as possible and hide some more treats for him to find, then when he's done that sit with him for a while .What sort of bed will he be having? It's a shame you are throwing his bed because it could just help him a bit more ,I would be tempted to keep his sofa a little longer just until you know hes settled, then chuck it.
Hope everything goes well

I agree - get someone to have him for the day if you can as you'll be far too busy to be paying any attention to Cam on the day.
When we moved house we had 6 dogs & it was a nightmare. (only because we had so many dogs to think of)
I wouldn't worry about his sofa - I'm sure he can let go, get him a nice new bed & he'll be well impressed. you'll find he'll settle very quickly, as he'll have all familiar things around him. most importantly he'll have you. I sometimes travel & stay in unfamiliar places & I always have my dog with me - she's happy wherever we go cos she has me & her fave toy. that's all that's important in life to her.
Good luck with the move. :)

If your going to throw the settee away why not just keep 1 of the cushions so he will have a familier smell. once hes settled you can throw it away.
I'm moving next week -Fingers crossed ;) and we are taking the dogs to the kennels for the day and then they will come 'home ' in the evening to the new house -but we are keeping their beds ;) maybe you could introduce a new blanket now and get it as smelly as poss before the move -and then it will be there for Cam to come 'home ' to
Good luck

just a word of warning really lol we moved 2 weeks ago, with our then angelic 7mth old BC. hes never chewed anything before in our recent house, never bothered with my sons toys, never scratched a surface etc he was left alone for about an hour a day and was completely fine with lying in his bed untill we returned. Now we have moved lol the fun has started and everything has changed. When left alone he has ruined the front door frame by scratching/biting it, he has chewed toys of our little ones when he can get hold of them (so theyre now locked away which theyve never been before), he has scratched the paint on the back of one of the doors and when we put him in the garden at any point he has destroyed the plants and bitten the wooden bench. bearing in mind we rent our house so we will paying a hefty fine when we leave for the damage lol! so now were having to get a crate for him to leave him in whilst we go out as we cant go out now without one of us watching him.
just a word of light hearted warning anyway, as i said guinness was perfect before we moved :) apart from that lot he took to the new house easily, my mum helped us move and he trusts her so she came to the new house first thing and whilst we did all the moving she spent the day here with him so he got used to it.

Thanks for your tips everyone - v helpful. We had arranged for a friend to come and take Cam for the day, but unfortunately our move date was changed and she can't make it. So, we're going to pop him in the car (which he likes - he just curls up and goes to sleep) so he won't be upset by all the movement and we can keep a close eye on him. It's not ideal but it's the best we can manage.
If we ever need to leave him by himself in the new place we've been advised to leave him in his crate for the first couple of weeks, until he gets settled. Like Nails' dog Cam has never really chewed furniture (he has a penchant for Adidas trainers and hi fi equipment) but he's still very young and I don't want him to fret.
Jo :)
