I have a laptop and desktop and the desktop hardly gets used because the screen keeps freezing. It has norton installed and avg and i have ran checks on it but to no avail it has no viruses that i am aware of or shown up (i have checked for the worm ones).
I am wondering if it is actually a problem with the pc itself? I'm taking a guess at overheating?
Any ideas?

It could be there's a conflict between the two anti-virus programs you have installed.
That would be my guess, not an experts guess, but I keep reading about Norton conflicting with all sorts of things, and two programs doing the same job will often be in conflict checking the same things at the same time.

I thought that Robert but AVG was installed after this problem because i thought there maybe a virus or otherwise that norton wasn't detecting.
Apart from chucking it through the window i am at a loss?

Sarah....this subject came up a couple of days ago when i was talking to a friend of mine. Apparently, AVG & Norton are not compatible with one another & that is probably what's causing your freeze problem. If i were you, then i would uninstall the Norton & keep the AVG, plus download the Zonealarm, this works well alongside the AVG. Sue.

I'll give it a go Sue, but like i said i had the freezing before avg but i gotta try something as my little girl was just getting used to using the pc and i just can't afford another (and woe betide her touching my laptop, well if i must) :)

If the worst comes to the worst you could try wiping the hard disc & re-installing Windows again. You will lose all the stuff you had on it but at least you'd be starting with a clean disc & new operating system then if it still freezes it's likely the hardware at fault.
We had this problem a few months ago and tried numerous things (thorough scandisk, deleting stuff, defrag etc) but in the end we had to reformat and start again. Luckily my son had a spare hard disk so we didn't lose anything (but essential stuff you could put on disks) and some programmes we just downloaded again from the web. We started off with Norton but changed to AVG, I couldn't see the point of paying for Norton updates when AVG is free (and a very good program too :) )

I run Norton and AVG side by side with no problems, I have Windows XP Home operating system, my daughter has the same she also doesn't have any problems with the two either. Maybe you need to run something like Registry Mechanic, to make sure all your registry files are in order, or even Ad-aware, you may have spy wear on your machine.

If you have your windoze disc, you can do windoze install over your existing copy with out formatting your disc, that would repair any corrupt files you may have, causing your pc to freeze.

I run Norton personal fire wall and AVG on xp professional and they work just fine. I did have some problems with my pc but it was down to not having enough memory to operate things properly.Try to do too much and it will freeze due to not enough resources (ie memory) Try putting some more memory in i added 128 so now i have 256 memory and it did seem to work. Also what are you using to connect to the internet? if you are using cable broadband via usb this takes a lot of memory so it is advised you use a network card around a tenner to free up some memory instead.

AHA!!! sonny i think that's what it may be!
The desktop had win98 which i wasn't used to anymore seeing as my laptop was xp so i installed xp and on the same day broadband.
I had a good idea i was overloading it somewhere but not techno minded wasn't sure.
Have wiped everything off and started again this afternoon so if it is still the same i'll chuck it (no only joking i'll try the card!)
Sarah
p.s Thanks everyone!
