While looking for a hotel for my Mom and Dad  (in their 70'S)for a short break-Treacle (Thank you) suggested the Langtry...we are all so taken with the hotel we are now searching for more hotels with that little bit extra you know history/service/food/location. For Mom and Dad they like short breaks and with Mom's declining health/mobility we want them to have lots of lovely/special holidays now.
They gave us all so much when we were younger often going without themselves now we want them to be a bit "spoilt".
Any suggestions...you are a cultured lot so where have you been you would go again! Oh must be in UK Dad won't fly.
Thanks
Karen

ok two very special hotels i 've stayed at recently ,Armathwaite hall hotel in Keswick which is set in a 400 acre deer park overlooking bassenthwaite lake .They have ground floor rooms with there own private patio if mobility is a problem and one of our party took there dog along.
Bodysgallen hall llandudno is also excellent wonderful gardens and excellent service .not to far from local theatres and llandudno centre.

Have you any part of the country in mind Karen, and does your Mum need a room with aids for the disabled? City or country? What do they like doing - historical buildings or shopping etc?
- By kazz Date 18.02.04 18:24 UTC
Right,
Right in the centre of the country B'ham so anywhere is within distance really.
Mom doesn't need a room for the disabled (but Dad might if she starts shopping ;) ) no seriously no need for that as long as there is a lift... lots of stairs would be a big n, but most hotels have lifts so no problem there.
Mom doesn't think she's been away unless she can walk along the sea.

Hi

The Nnant Du Lodge in the Brecon Beacons set by a river in the Beacons national park (part of it anyway) and its an old coaching lodge a couple of hundred years old I think, fantastic restuarant and only 20 mins drive from the mumbles beaches just past Swansea or 20 minutes the other way is Cardiff which is a fantastic city.

LOL about Dad! Can't suggest nice sea side hotels unless they fancy a trip to Ireland? Know a super one in the North that would fit the bill ... and for Dad a nice one in Donegal where there is almost nowhere TO shop in the area!

I can second the Armathwaite Hall - great hotel.  HOw about a visit to the North East - we have lots of beaches up here and some great shopping.  The Lumley Castle Hotel is just outside of Durham (if you Dad is keen on Cricket it overlooks the new Durham County Ground)  It really is a medieaval castle, and has some amazing rooms, dungeons etc.  They even do "banquet" nights if you  fancy it, but otherwise the restaurant is excellent.  The King James Suite has to be seen to be believed!  the fire place is big enough for the whole family to stand in (if the fire isnt lit, of course) and the bath -tub is on a podium in the bedroom!  There was an article in the Times just before Valentines day about a wonderful hotel in Edinburgh - attatched to an Italian Restaurant, very unusual and very romantic, but I cant remember the name!
bye

Umm will have to look that one up then Armathwaite.
Listen Gwen my Dad is so Cricket crazy...we or rather I had to get him sky so he could get up at 3.00/4.00 am to watch cricket :) and all of us girls/grandchildren/mom can explain what the rules to cricket are and we know how to bowl a googlie (even if I can't spell it)
That sounds good though; up North sounds nice. They really don't mind where, but a "nice" hotel is the main thing.

Karen (off to work soon so I won;t be able to reply until morning)

If you want to tie in the cricket then the best hotel in Leeds is Oulton Hall which is the only 5 star hotel and has 2 rosette dining facility.  Have stayed there and it is gorgeous - really old, stone carvings, heaven if you enjoy that kind of thing and Headingley is just a drive away.

hope they enjoy wherever they end up.
