hi, ive just bought a 10 week old bitch and i need as much advice on looking after her and the best way of training her as i can get.
Thanks anybody.
Buy yourself a copy of 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey, I got mine from Amazon. You'll find it invaluable.
Good luck with your pup!
liberty :)

Congratulations on your new pup & well done for seeking advice. Having been a rotti owner I'd suggest (as with any breed of dog) that socialization is of great importance. Try & take your pup into town & other busy places, markets or car boot sales are all great experiences for her. I'd also try & join a dog club. Ringcraft or obedience -- again this will help socialize her & also help you to train her to repect you & be a well behaved & well balanced young lady. :)
What have you called her?

Pick her up and carry her out, over to the school/supermarket. Pop her in the car get her used to lots and lots of things and people. It helps believe me it helps; Took Sal on short train journies too people loved her and she loved it too sitting on your lap.
When you say house training? what do you mean? keep an eye on her and if she starts to circle pick her up and pop her outside and praise her when she wee's or whatever. When she wakes up pop her out same routine. Time and lots and lots of paitence and you'll soon find your doing better. Don't loose your paitence. You'll have a few hiccups but it will come right in the end.
Lovely name too by the way

she doesnt do the round and around thing b4 pooing, i got up this morning came down stairs and all was good, put her in the garden for 10 minutes whilst i made her food up, she came in ate her food then went back in the garden for 20 minutes did nothing so we came in and i had my breakfast when i went in to the front room she had left me a nice present in the middle of the floor.what am i doing wrong ?

I'm afraid that until they are housetrained you can't take your eyes off them for a second unless they are asleep! Only have her in the room that you are in so that you can watch her behaviour and learn her own particular signs that she needs to 'go'. It also means they can't chew anything without your knowing about it as well! It's very very time-consuming, but it's the quickest way of doing it.
And go out into the garden with her and watch her - don't just put her out, because you need all opportunities to reinforce the idea that peeing and pooing outside is good! You need to be able to give her your chosen word of 'command'
while she is in the middle of doing it! Not before, and not after. Then you can give her lots of praise for doing it.

what sort of command should i use, good girl ?

I know this is not much help but Sal pops out and has a wee now if you say "hurry up." Sad but true, not my chosen word but obviously I said it quite a lot as she was being housetrained in the cold weather. :)
It works though and whatever you choose be consistent.
You are putting her out but she is a baby and has no idea why she's out there apart from to chew something or play. As JG says keep her with you in the same room watch for signs she will be doing something sniffing or standing still or circling.Something you just need to watch what YOUR pup does and then act.
Karen

Words of instruction should be for one thing only - you don't want her to wee every time you say "Good girl"! And it's got to be something you don't mind saying in public! I say "Busy" for having a wee and "Hurry up" for having a poo. Some people say "wee-wee" and "poo-poo". It's your choice - but it
must be something that is only used for this one purpose.
It's exactly the same with all 'commands' - one word only for each action. So when you want your dog to come to you, say her name then "Come"
or "Come here"
or "Here" - never vary it. Just as "Sit" must never be "Sit down" (because you are going to use the word "Down" for lying down), and "Down" should only mean "Lie down" not "Stop jumping up" - for that most people say "Off".
It seems confusing at first, but it's like a person learning a foreign language - it's very confusing if the words for everything keep changing!

What is she eating now? I am not sure I would change her food as she is just a baby. But I feed Sal Burns now and find it to be great...you get what you pay for too.

she is on Bakers puppy complete, but her stools are a little loose and she has bad wind.
hi i have a 8 1/2 month old male rottie i feed him bakers pup and his poo was the same, he is still on bakers but adult, which is now ok but she is to young to go on to that yet ask your vet about that one.
as for wees an poos it took me one week 2 house traine mine but he was 3 months i got a clicker you must take her out as soon as she wakes up, finnishs playing. eating and when shes had a drink, get a click i found brill as soon as she has finnished 1s or 2s click and give her a treat (cheese is best i found or meat, and try and take her to the same spot ever time good luck hope i helped :)

Roxy - what a lovely name. You've been given some good house training advice. You also need to pop her out at every possible time she'll need to go to the toilet.
First thing in the morning - pop her out. Every time she wakes up - pop her out. After she's fed - pop her out. Last thing at night - pop her out & every 2/3 hours inbetween pop her out & as the others have said stay with her. If you just walk around the garden, saying your command, she'll soon learn & when she's done...... praise & in you go.
If she has an accident in the house - if you see her pick her up & put her straight out, but don't tell her off for it - just ignore - otherwise when she's outside with you, she'll not want to go as she'll remember she got told off for doing a wee once.
If you put in the effort now (it is time consuming) but it'll soon pay off & you'll soon have a lovely clean baby)
good luck.

I'm sure you'll have her house trained in no time, Rotties are very quick! Can't really add much to the other good advice really, it's a case of watching them, taking them out regularly and heaping on the praise when they "perform". I've always given mine the run of the house so they get to know that it's their domain and I've never had one that's taken over a week to housetrain.
I would give Burns Mini-Bites a try. I agonised over what food to feed my new pup and went with the "lesser protein is best" theory in the end. The theory is that if you give too much protein, it causes them to grow too fast and contributes towards bone problems.
I'm more than happy with it, Grace doesn't lack in anything so I'm glad I made the choice.
