I expect he is attention seeking and so you need to show him what is most rewarding by ignoring the barking and the nano second that he is quiet click and treat.  Do NOT respond to the barking with your voice, eye contact, etc; eventually this will work.  It does take time as it is probably a habit by now; if you go out of the room and he barks do not reenter until he stops then click and reward.

surely if we reward as soon as he stops barking, he'll think he is being rewarded for barking, not for stopping??? As for the clicking bit - not got one, do you think they are better than just treating alone, ie do you get better results??

No that is why your timing has to be right.  If you click when he is BARKING then you are rewarding THAT behaviour.  If you click when he is QUIET he will twig that THIS is being rewarded.  Click and treat when quiet, ignore when noisy.  If you don't have  a clicker just use a word like WOW or ZORRO one that is not in every day use (unless you live a strange neighbourhood) :D  The click or word is the signal to the dog that it has got it right and therefore a goodie is coming.
