Angel is usually pretty good on the lead and only pulls when she's really excited or smells something good! If she does pull I usually just stop and wait etc etc like everyone advises. However she ALWAYS pulls like a nutter when we cross a road and there seems to be bugger all I can do about it cuz I cant really stop!! She does this whether there are cars or not and whether I get her to sit first or not!
Is there any solution to this??
Thanks
Jo and Angel

May be she has realised you never stop when you cross a road, you just hurry across. Try when the road is clear, or find a quite one, take 2 or 3 paces into the road then turn and walk back to the path and continue up the road for a short while and then repeat the start across the road and change your mind and back to the path. After doing this a few time finish crossing the road on the odd occasion.

As Jackie says, with any problem you get, try to set up a training situation. A road on an industrial estate during a quiet time, maybe a road on a housing estate? Occasionally, when there is nothing coming and it's safe to do so, stop her in the sit in the middle of the road.

When we cross the road people often say something like "Quickly!" as they start to cross. This seems to automatically wind the dog up, get it all excited at the very time when we want it calm! Try to analyse YOUR actions and see if it has a root cause initiated inadvertently by yourself.

Best wishes, John

I think John has hit the nail on the head here. I was so relieved to finally get Sparky to take a few steps across the road (he and traffic don't get on) that I've landed myself in the same boat  - quick - let's get across here as quick as we can before you change your mind! I now spend a few minutes each night going over and over crossing a road - it's not quite working yet, but it is getting better. :)

We taught our girls two different commands.  They must ALWAYS stand-stay when we reach a place where we are going to cross.  Then if the road is very clear they get the command 'heel-cross' and they stay close to us.  If the road is busy and we have to dive into a gap they get the command 'quick-cross' and they know they are allowed to dive across with us running.

The first in the training was the 'stand-stay' at the side of the road though.  Then we taught them 'heel-cross' so they learned they always had to walk nicely.  Once they had that down we then moved onto the 'quick-cross' because of course there are times you are going to need to get across fast and they need to know the difference.

Hope this helps a little.
