Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / eats her own mess

Hi all,

I have a persistant problem with my 6 year old GSD. She has always been prone to eating other animals poo and her own, on some occasions in the garden, when we have missed clearing up one. But recently she has taken to messing over night and then eating it, the reason we know this is because the evidence, shall we say, is there in the morning. She has just started peeing as well, but not all the time. She also rolls in it when out. I have read all of your comments and advice and havent found anything that we have not already tried. We got our Briard just over a year ago and we know that she is very resentful of him, she is a right madam and makes her feelings very plain. Nothing we do behavourally seems to help her,I treat them both exactly the same etc.She was not spoilt before we got him and our treatment of her hasnt changed. She sleeps in our front porch as she did before he came and he sleeps in the kitchen, this is the way it has always been, as left together no-one would get any sleep. But this problem is now every night and sometimes when we are out, before we got him she never did anything like this and was the cleanest bitch ever. So far I have ignored it but i am finding it very hard now as it is smelly and very repetitive cleaning up several times  aday. She has 2 long walks across fields aday, one with him and one without. She also eats his poo given half the chance and licks up his wee when we are out for a walk, only when she thinks we arent looking! The diet hasnt changed they have always had tripe and biscuit with markies and boneos inbetween as a treat. She was recently very ill with sickness and the runs and we suspect it is because of this, I have had 4 GSDs in the past and know that they like to roll in poo and eat it occasionally but not as persistantly as this. He is the total opposite and wont even smell his own poo, and when she messes he wont walk past it or near it.  Any advice would be welcome, I thought that i knew the breed so well, it just goes to show, you can never be too confident :-)

Have you tried giving your dog some digestive enzymes?  Sometimes feeding these to a dog helps in the breakdown of proteins, carbs, fats and sugars so that the dog is obtaining the maximum bio availability of the food.  You can get these from H & B and may be easier and more effective than feeding say papaya or pineapple?  One of the reasons that raw fed dogs are not generally coprophagic is that all the nutrients have been used whilst in commercial food a lot of food has not been digested correctly.

Just a thought.

hi,

my gsd owen used to do the same it was a nightmare especially when he came in and you think um you have funny smelling breath anyway we used some tablets from the pet shop and they seem to work, but if he's feeling hungry you still have to keep an eye on him.
