Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Westie digging!

My 8 month old Westie has been digging in my back garden, and I was wondering what other people do to fill the holes in? Should I just leave them or fill them in?
Thanks

I have read that if you fill them in with her own poo it is suppose to discourage them from digging...Good luck :)

I had a problem with digging when my 2 were younger- most grow out of eventually. What you could do in the meantime is secure a piece of chicken wire or metal grate over where your dog digs then cover over with soil. The dog won't like the feel of the mesh/grate on it's paws when it starts to dig again and hopefully will be detered from future digging. Have also heard that burying the dog's own poo will stop it... never tried that one myself though, didn't fancy cleaning up the dog's paws afterwards.

Alternatively you could go with the flow. As the old saying goes "if you can't beat em, join em" a friend of mine bought a plastic sandpit for her dog filled it with playsand and buried toys in it. Her dog loved it stopped digging up her garden and dug in his pit instead. Hope this helps, good luck!

I just fill them in again, replant the plants, fingers crossed they will survive :D

The first couple of 'digs' were quite small but now Spice has progressed to what we call 'bear pits'

We just keep several towels near the door now,to clean off her paws.

On the whole the garden is 'safe' all dog friendly plants etc. and at least whilst she is digging she is not pruning the roses!

My Westie used dig when he was a pup, but as he got older (he's 2 now) he's stopped it. He did once dig so deep that all you could see was his back legs and his tail with earth being showered everywhere. But as I say he's now stopped.
