Hi, it has many serious side effects for long term use. More links below to go with Lels one.

My last ruogh collie was on it for arthritis She gained a lot of weight which did not help her. So we had to continually have her on a diet. I am sure there were other things but the vet kept everything in check with regular check ups

Thank you all for your links :)

Charlie has been on pred after being diagnosed with Lymphoma (im sure you will already know this) He's been on it now since April 2003!
I guess hes doing good! :)
Late last week he began being sick but only in the mornings (i was wondering if it was linked)

Thanks again!

Hi my lab was on preds long term for cancer, and although she finially lost the battle to cancer, she had no problems with the preds and her dosage was very high.

Have had several dogs on long term PLT, thing is you have to weigh up the situation, although the long term use of PLT may cause problems in most cases the dog will not be on it for long enough for that to be a concern. One always has to think of the dogs quality of live and I would rather shorten it's life by a few month to allow it to live it's life now to the full and as pain free as possible.

Agree with Jackie, if being on PLT  makes life easier for the dog side effects are almost not worth worring about if you have a happy hound. My lab has always had arthritic type problems, he was rescued and not fed as a puppy. So any life he has is on borrowed time. If he had the choise he would have the tablet, particually if he could have the biscuit that goes with it !!!!!

My lab has been on PLT for years, has kept him going, but at over 50p a tablet expensive. Where can you get it cheaper?

Long term use of prednisolone (or prednisone) replicates the same symptoms as Cushings disease. My last GSD was on quite long term, and had all the bad side effects, but no other choice at the time. If there was an alternative I would definitely take it, seeing what it did to our girl over time

Thanks again for all your advice :)
Charlie, doesnt really have BAD days as such anymore.. but when he was being sick a lot i suddenly thought 'Oh my, what are these tablets done to him??'
But he seems to of yet again overcome this, and he's back to being charlie!
As he has Lymphoma, i know were on borrowed time :( But the time we've had has been excellent. 10 months cant be bad!

Thanks again
