Hi, can't find patterdales in breed listing- thought they were terriers?
My family and I have taken to a patterdale we see at the stables every week. Red in colour with a lovely temperament. Having never seen the breed before - can anyone help ?
many thanks.

Hi,
Patterdales are not a KC recognised breed, which is why they aren't listed. There are often adverts for them in magazines such as the Shooting Times and Countryman's Weekly.

You are more likely to find one in the sporting papers and magaziens. A word of warning they are not the easyists of dogs to live with, allways on the go never still and requiring loads of work to do.

Hi Guest.......a friend of ours has a 6 month old Patterdale terrier, he is a complete nutcase!! I was looking after him for the night last week & he drove me & the other dogs crazy within half an hour. It was that bad i had to phone my mum & ask her to take him as one of my males wanted to eat the darn pup for annoying him....lol Absolutely lovely nature & loves everyone, but a real handful. I would say this breed needs a lot of attention & firm handling, otherwise they could become a destructive nuisance. My mum had him overnight & he climbed on the kitchen table several times, scratched all the windowsills, terrorized her 2 cats, destroyed a dried flower arrangement & left a few unwanted deposits in the house! He is so active & i don't think this breed makes a good house pet, they are definitely workers. Wonderful little dog, but not for me...lol

I have owned Patterdales & must admit that I heave never seen a red one, infact I have only ever seen black or very rarely white, I think that this dog that you have seen is probably a cross. They are not suitable pet dogs as they are not bred that way they are workers, they are advertised regulaly in the Shooting Times. Hope this helps.
p.s don't be put off if you really like them they are a lovelly little dog.

Yes you do get red patterdales, and chocolate ones too, some people call them "Fell Terriers".
Dawn.
patterdales come in black and red but the red are less common and often get confused with the lakeland.
patterdales are lovelly little WORKING terriers! do plenty of research they are not always the best of pets.
poor bites are very common in patteredales so make sure you check any puppies you view.
