Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Bolognese toilet problems!
- By Guest [gb] Date 17.02.04 11:52 UTC
WE purchased a Bolognese from a breeder and he was 6 months old at purchase (had he got in bad habits?!) he is now 8 months old. he does not ask to go outside for toilet needs but if we put him out he will go. I have read masses of books and done all the suggested things such as praising on performance but we still have some problems. he does not ask to go out, so we just have to keep putting him out. Also he has taken to weeing all over the house I think to mark his territory, we have two cats and its sometimes where they have been, yesterday my daughters bed! Today our bed, which I found odd as he sleeps there and I thought they never solied their bed areas? Also its not a bit but a full bladder wee!! Please help we love him dearly but he is driving us nuts! By the way he has not been catstrated, would this be a help? I don't want to do it if not as we have absolutely no other problems with him and he is a sweetie in all other ways. By the way we have a 13  year old German Shep but they adore each other so have no problems there but thought it may help with diagnosis. Really grateful for any ideas!! By the way, if I don't take him out at the times I know he poos he would happily do that anywhere too!
Thanks!

If it's a full bladder wee then it isn't marking territory, he just needs to go.  I'd close the bedroom doors.  You need to make sure that there is nothing medically wrong.  Have the vet check that out.  If you take him out regularly and he goes and you don't wait for him to have an accident indoors then maybe he'll eventually give you an indication that he needs out but it's early days yet.

Personally, I don't teach my dogs to ask to go out because I would be forever at their 'beck and call'  They trust me to let them out regularly and are accustomed to crossing their legs on the odd occasion if I am a bit slow.  ;)

You need to severely restrict his area so that he is not free to roam.  A crate would be a good idea when he is not supervised, and by that I mean you watching like a hawk, the smaller the area the less likely he is to soil and/or mark.  Once he is fairly reliable in a confined space you can start slowly increasing his "space".  If he was brought up in kennels he is unlikely to have been house trained.  Castration may help with marking however this is more of a training issue than anything else.  You need to condition him to use a particular spot by praise and treat and ignore mistakes.
