I am starting to do some pre course reading on a Prince 2 Practitioners course and have got to read through a 400 page book  It has no sex or violence in it and so does make quite tedious reading :D

I have a problem where I have always been a speed reader which is not the best way to do this.

Anybody got any good hints of re training myself as need to get through this and actually take some of it in !!

Thanks

Lucy

Lucy, no handy hints from me, I do the same as you and can devour a novel in a few hours.  Just out of curiosity, what is a Prince 2 Practitioners course, and what's it for?

Do a section at a time , then go do something else.  Think about what you have read for a bit. The start the next section..

That is how I do it , Not a study person me like to read things once and remember them.

Easiest thing to do is to put a piece of paper underneath the line you are eading, moving it down line by line. The way we speed read is by moving our eyes along AND down alternatively from left to right so if you can stop that happening you should be able to read it fully :)

Lucky you, Lucy, I did the Foundation course and have so far wimped out of the Practitioners :D - the amount of reading on a non-residential course for the Foundation was bad enough!

Thanks for the tips folks :)

I tend to always read the last page of a book to find out what happens as well but don't think it will be much use on this book

Jackyjat the course and exam are a Project management qualification which is a project management technique for delivery of Projects or Products. Used widely in Government and more widely now in commerce and Industry.

Oh well I will get my piece of paper and start to read section by section. Shame I can't have a nice snack in between each section as I am on that blumin CD Goddess malarky ! Oh well I suppose I can have another bowl of special K :D

I found that the best way to study any book was to find a chapter (or just a couple of pages) that appealed and read it - not to read from 'first to last'.  This way you end up thinking about what you've read and by jumping about you stop the 'devouring urge' :D  (I devour novels too :D ) Eventually you will have read the whole book and will have taken in more than you ever would normally.  It also stops your brain switching off when things get a bit heavy or boring.  Try limiting your reading sessions to 10 minutes at a time as well and you should find it easier to retain :)

Good luck however you decide to do it :D

Got to agree with Melodysk's paper, I always speed read and to stop the habit is hard as your eyes are always looking at the next paragraph before you've finished the last lol  :)
