Topic Dog Boards / General / Good breed for allergy sufferer?

I'm after some advice.  I want to own a dog, and have been told that Cairn or West Highland terriers are good dogs for allergy sufferers, as they do not malt.  Is this true?

Years ago, my parents owned a poodle, which also didn't cause me any problems, and I remember that the poodle had to be trimmed, as it didn't malt.

Are Cairns and Westie's a good breed for allergy suffers, and are there any others?

Hi ,this is a subject close to my heart ,my daughter is asthmatic and we have  had to also research dogs with low shedding coats , we were  lucky with our last dog she was Tibetan terrier x Bearded Collie ,she also had to be clipped as her hair grew quite long  but did not shed hair like a lot of dogs,,she was p.t.s. almost a year ago and so the search started again ,we rescued Lola and she is Westie x Lhasa apso ,once again needs clipping but doesn't moult, dont be tempted by the likes of Labradoodles etc  often advertised especially for people with allergies ,if you have a good look throughout this site you will find LOTS of posts ref to these and similar "so called  breeds" ,,"stay away  !! "poodles are probably one of the best dogs to look at  but also check out your local rescue homes ,maybe you will be as lucky as we have been ,good luck  Sue & Lola xx

There are quite a few breeds who seem to trigger allergies less than others.........

But.........in general, its not the hair/fur that is causing the allergie, its the dander, and all dogs, no matter what coat type have that....sometimes it can be the animals saliva as well.....

Research the breeds you like, then go and visit some breeders (and if a breeder doesnt want you to visit for a day or half a day, then you dont want to buy a pup from them) and see if there is a reaction.

If it IS the fur, then in general the wire coated breeds, and the 'fuzzy' breeds seem to be better....ie wire terriers of most kinds, schnauzers, bedlingtons, poodles..... also i believe some people find whippets ok, as their fur is so fine, and they shed very little.

But whatever you do dont take someone elses word for it, go and meet, adn play with puppies and adults of your chosen breed, check and double check, as its no fun parting with a pup when u turn out to be allergic to it!
