Help,
We are the proud owners of a new puppy who is 13weeks old, about three weeks ago he started scratching and biting his fur out, resulting in bald patches to his paws, hind quarters and tummy.  This has caused him, and us much distress.  Our vet has treat him for fleas with Frontline and has placed him on a fresh chicken and rice diet for one month. He said if there is no improvement after the month he will be referred to  a skin specialist, as he thinks it could be some time of food allergy or another kind of reaction.

I'm really worried about him. Has anyone got any advice for us?

We have never had a Newfoundland before but have always had

Could be a food or environmental allergy; the only way you will know for sure is by asking for a blood test which can then be sent off to Yorktest laboratories.  It is not cheap but if you are insured you will be covered.  Food allergy is a doddle to treat, environmental allergies are more problematic but not impossible to at least alleviate if not completely solve.  Look at the Itchy Bichon thread, the info on allergy testing is included there.

Re insurance - most insurance companies have an exclusion if the dog hasn't completed their vaccination course - so be aware :(

Should be ok if you have had the six weeks free insurance via the breeder though.

Do you think it could be anything like washing powder etc . I mean if you have washed any of his blankets etc maybe try a milder one and see if theres any difference . Another one to watch for is Shake and Vac in the carpets . That can prove an irritant
Just some ideas
