- By sandridge [gb] Date 15.02.04 21:27 UTC
Hi everyone,Im hopefully breeding my adorable bitch very soon and ive asked different breeders alsorts of questions , and guess what ive thought of another, how many of you breeders send their puppies too their new homes with a supply of food? And does anyone know how long it takes to hear back from the kennel club once youve applied for an Affix?

I always give a bag of puppy food to the new owners. This way the pup will be fed the same food in its' new home. Pups will be stressed enough without changing their food. If the new owner wants to change the food then they can do it gradually using the free bag and their 'new food' after the pup has settled in.

I can't remember how long it took to get my affix but it only took a few weeks.

im so lookin forward too the whole process i think the only thing thats worring me is not knowing whether the new owners will treat and respect the pups. But this must be every breeders nitemare

Don't know how long an affix takes to be granted - ours took a couple of weeks but that was some time ago.  The KC are really on the ball at the moment (well litter registrations seem to be coming back quickly) so maybe it won't take too long.

As for puppy food, I have had 4 pups go to their new homes this weekend and all took food with them.  Mine also take water - 'cos ours is very hard(!!) and I don't want them to have an upset tummy.  OH forgot to give the water to one new pup owner - I was still at work when they collected him, but I have phoned them this evening and he is OK.

Yeah mine get some food, a little toy a blanket and some other little goodies.  But it does help for them to go to their new home with a meal that they are used to.

For an affix I would think it would be a couple of months because I'm sure that it has to go in the KC gazette first in case there's another one the same or similar, not totally sure about this though.

This is what I would definatly recommend gets sent home with a puppy:

Five Generation pedigree
Photographs of parents
Copies of parents OFA and CERF
Buyer's contract
Vaccination and worming record
Copy of Temperament Test
Article on Housetraining (includes crate training)
Article on Clicker Training (and two clickers)
Article on Fear Periods
Article on Loose Leash Walking
Article on Teaching "Come!"

As well as a sample of food, feeding schedule, and a some water.

This way you can be sure you are informing the new owner of as much informatiom as possible. I also know breeders who offer rebates if the new owner takes the pup to training classes and completes the course. This then assures the breeder that the dog is well trained.

I didn't even have my bitch mated until I had my affix granted! I'm not a gambler!

My pups leave with:
A copy of their pedigree
Hearing test certificate
KC registration certificate (or a signed statement - "registration to follow")
Diet sheet and 'care instructions'
A contract/receipt stating that in case of any disaster I mustbe informed so I can help (at any age)
6 weeks free insurance
A week's supply of food
A piece of their bedding
A rib bone for the first night

Hope this helps

thanx jeannie, ive got some muslin squares that imgoin too put in with them for a day or so ,so that they can go with the pups. The Affix will be applied for if megan HAS a litter and copes ok,then and only then will i breed frm her again, theres no reason why she shouldnt shes in really good health im not doin it for the money im wanting another lab of same quality and temp as my little lady. What is the jab that helps prevent fading puppy? And when should she have it?

When applying for an Affix you will need to allow a couple of months.  It took us 3 attempts at getting a name that didn't sound/look similar, so that was 9 names rejected and then you have to wait for the next edition of their magazine to be published with the new Affix names and a complaint can be lodged against the name up to a month after the magazine is issued, I believe.  So the sooner you apply the better.

how many characters allowed in an Affix ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.02.04 13:55 UTC
If you go to the Kennel Club site and click on Registrations, then Affixes, you'll be able to download the form with the details. As a pup's registered name can't have more than 24 letters (including the affix), it's best not to make it too long!

hi, all my puppies leave me with a 2 kg bag of their food, a goody bag of a few chews, a square of the vetbed that they have slept on (although its washed first) a 5 generation pedigree, worming certificate, copies of mum and dads hip and eye certs, dog food literature and order form, diet sheet, general help and information sheet, they also sign to accept that although i've used dogs with good hips/clear eyes thsi doesn't automatcially guarantee pup will be ok, also that pups cannot be bred from util hips/eyes have been tested, achieved good scores and i have seen certs, only then will i lift breeding restrictions placed on them at time of registration, (helps to protect my puppies from being bred willy-nilly with no thought of their health and that off any future generations). I also get them to sign that if they can't keep ant any stage of life, i must be 1st contact to assist with re-homing them
hope this helps

Hi
Just wondered if you could tell me more about affix's. Why have one? If you had an affix would this be in the pups kc name? Also what sort of things do you all put in contracts and puppy care sheet?
Cheers
Lou

An affix is like a surname that nobody else is allowed to use. All the pups have it as part of their name, so that they are easily traced back to their breeder. If a breeder doesn't have an affix it gives the impression (which may be false) that they are not really serious about the breed.

Of the 24 letters allowed doe this include spaces ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.02.04 19:32 UTC
The wording for naming puppies is "no more than 24 letters, including affix" - no mention of spaces. So you can have as many words as you choose, as long as there are no more than 24 letters. (But try to keep it short - there's nothing more tedious than writing out vast long names over and over again ... ;) )
