Hi all

I have got a 10 month old westie who at the moment sleeps in our conservatory as it is has got a radiator so is nice and warm like the rest of the house, the problem i have got is now he is older and fully housetrained i would like to have him sleeping up on the landing so that he is near us, is it easy to change the room that they sleep in only i was told that where the dog sleeps the first night as a puppy this is where he will always sleep. I don't want to upset him as he is a very good dog and we don't hear anything from him when he goes to bed but i thought it would be nice for him to sleep on the landing so that he is closer to us and more in the house instead of being in the conservatory as we shut the door to keep him in the 1 room.
I just wanted some advice before changing him around as to whether it would work or not, only when i was told that where they sleep as a puppy is where they will always sleep it makes me wonder whether he will take to being in another part of the house, he does go upstairs during the day and when we are in he follows us everywhere but i just wondered how i would have to go about moving him.

Helen I have had Amy in a pen She is now 6months and we would have liked her to sleep upstairs Our westie sleeps on the bed. We have left the pen open but she still goes in to her own wee bedroom but the choice is hers now

Why dont you let him make up his own mind by leaving the door open at night so he can come and go as he wants to.

Yeh i agree, leave the door open and see where he ends up. Buddy has the run of the house. His fav spot is on the back of the sofa so he can see the comings and goings outside. I leave my bedroom door open so if he decides to he can jump on the bed to be next to me. Sometimes he justs crashes out at the top of the landing but that only tends to be when he's too warm.
It's not everybody's cup of tea to give their dogs the run of the house but i'm a big softie with him and he does'nt cause any damage so what's the harm.
