Did anyone see the food police last night on bbc 1, my god  i've never seen anything so horrible in my life, it has really really put me off eating meat, will still eat seafood etc, but no chickens, pigs, cow, has anyone got any good recipies for veggie food, that still gives you all the goodness you need to be heathly?

My advice would be just to buy meat from suppliers you can trust.  It's easy for me because I live in the country and buy my meat from the local farmers market.  All of the local meat producing farmers would be happy for you to visit them and see the excellent conditions their animals are kept in.  Once tasted, in comparison to supermarket meat, there is no turning back.

I won't each chicken though and I've gone off turkey since last night.

Remember that by the end of this series, none of us will ever go out to eat, be that restaurants or hospitals, use supermarkets or small shops, or eat meat!

Hi Steph

Im veggie :)

I live on pasta dishes, cheese and tom pizzas, jacket pots with  various fillings such as cheese and coleslaw, cheese and beans. also have veegie burgers, veg curries, stir frys, etc etc

Since being veggie I feel as though I have more energy, less tired etc, also have not had as many colds etc

but I can longer stand the smell of meat and I USE TO EAT A LOT OF MEAT BUT NOW IT MAKES ME FEEL ILL TO LOOK AT

Hi Heidi,

that food sounds really yummy :) i've decided that i am going to turn veggie starting from today, i've always liked the smell and taste of meet but i could never do christmas dinner with all those jiblets (sp) that programme last night really put me off, i'll still cook steak and stuff for my other half but not for me, going to go to the supermarket tonight and get loads of fillings for my jacket pots :D

I've been a vegetarian for 23 years and I don't find one thing appealing about a slab of dead animal flesh.

Vegetarians live longer, thats a proven fact!
- By Poodlebabe [gb] Date 12.02.04 17:29 UTC
Lily why don't you post a link to the research that vegetarians live longer.

I'm not even replying to this one.........I'm not looking for an argument, it is something I read in a newspaper years ago.  Like I read that single people live longer as they don't have the stresses of kids!

Just for you Jesse!   Here's a link! http://www.alanlam.demon.co.uk/dyk2f.htm

Steph

You will find that afetr a few weeks you will not even think of meat, and the thougt of it does not appeal to you at all and the smell yuk its vile

You will however be surprised how many dishes contain meat, when I first went veggie I had to really think about what to eat I was cant have that it has meat in oh and that does and that

Just look for the v sign, takes ages when you first go shopping lol

depends how far you take it, some veggies just dont eat meat others dont have gelatine (found inlots of sweets etc) depends on what extremes you want to take it to

Since being veggie I also buy not tested on animals products all my shampoo, make up, hairspray etc etc

Ahhh but don't all veggies admit that the smell of bacon is quite appealling !! :)

I have a friend who was veggie and she admitted to me once when we were both very drunk that she did have the occasional bacon buttie ! :)

I love veggie food but still need my meat ! :)
- By Sally [gb] Date 12.02.04 14:12 UTC
You are so right.  I love the smell of bacon and I used to adore bacon butties but I still couldn't eat one now.

I could never go veggie    love my meat.

what gets me is when people say im a vegertaian but i eat chicken.........  ???/

That smell of Bacon does have a strange affect.  I have been veggie for 20+ years and I still love the smell of bacon (it was the last meat I gave up), but I couldnt possibly eat it.  The nearest I get is the odd packet of Bacon Frazzles!

my favourite crisps ever :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.02.04 15:11 UTC
I heard that bacon flavour crisps are okay for veggies, but that cheese and onion aren't! Something to do with the production process ...
- By Dogs [gb] Date 12.02.04 17:21 UTC
Jeangenie

Cheese and onion crisps are not ok for us veggies as the lineing of stomachs cow is used in them as flavouring or something like that :)

and I still dont like smell of bacon though, ;)
- By Dogs [gb] Date 12.02.04 17:22 UTC
lining of the cows stomach sorry :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.02.04 17:31 UTC
Thanks! I've often wondered why - it seemed very odd!

Bacon in any shape or form does nothing for me...but a huge piece of vege quiche...now!

/Delia Smith did a good Vegetarian cook book, using both simple ingredients, and more unusual ones. I LOVE  Mexican stuffed burritos with salad and rice on the side, melted cheese and refried beans, and guacamole, and sour cream!!!

Watch out for calcium levels, so drink low fat or semi skimmed milk as fatty milk may mean calcium isn't absorbed so well. Ensure you get a balance of amino acids - beans on toast fulfils that for example. It's really not so different - you just get the protein from milk, eggs, cheeses, soya, pulses, tofu and various vegetarian options such as those in the vegetarian section at the local supermarket. Plenty of Quorn stuff etc.

If you do want meat at all, i agree go for local stuff from people you can talk to.

Oooh, yes, the Delia book is brilliant.  Some of the recipes are a bit fiddly, but well worth the effort.

The taste of a good fillet with stilton sauce and a glass of wine - I could never give it up. I buy locally though, not from supermarkets.
- By stephanieohara [gb] Date 13.02.04 14:30 UTC

Do you have the BUAV guide (pocket size book of all products that are suitable for veggies and shops that sell veggie goods) a good handy little book. It can be obtained by contacting BUAV.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 14.02.04 22:17 UTC
