Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / what price should I charge?
- By Guest [us] Date 14.02.04 10:42 UTC
I have just bred my very first litter of staffordshire bull terriers. My bitch had ten healthy puppies as u can imagine I'm very happy! the question I'd like to ask is how much should I charge for the puppies I want to get a good price for them but I dont want to be too over the top then people wont want to buy them. both parents are kc reg and several of the pups are blue with white markings and lovely greeny-yellow coloured eyes. Ive been looking at prices in the free ad papers and the going rate seems to be around £450 - 500 but all the people who have expressed an interest so far  seem to favour the blue colour should I sell them for more? ive been told its an unusual colour and im very lucky to have 2 dogs to breed with which are blue coz my dog is white with a few blue spots and I should sell the blue colouredpuppies for a higher price, what do u think?

Generally people who charge more for particular colours are frowned upon as being unscrupulous - as long as the colour is within the Standard, none should be priced higher than others. If both dog and bitch have a good show record, you could charge more for the puppies, but if they are just pet animals then they should be priced lower.

You should charge what is the going rate for pups of similar quality.  Are the parents of the pups Hip Scored and eye tested, have they done well at shows???  All these factors would influence what you would expect to pay for a puppy.

You should certainly not be charging more for colour, and as far as I am aware the eye colour you mention is not that in the breed standard, but pups start of with bluey eyse, so hopefully yours will eventually go brown.

You shold be breeding staffs that fit the breed standard and help to improve the quality of the breed, regardless of colour.  As i understand it there are few quality dogs in the colours you have, probably because it is hard to get correct pigment in eye and also that to a large extent people breeding for colour take little notice of other breed stqandard requirements only being interested in colour, whcih is not a correct or responsible way of breeding.  I am very glad that there is only one coat colour pattern in my own breed with only the shade varying.  It is hard enough to breed a good dog withoutr being side tracked by colour and popularity of a give colour or not.

Also advertising pups for sale, as yopur post is likely to be taken, is not allowed on the forum.

Hi guest congratulations on your litter :)
firstly did the stud dog owner not advise you on the price of puppies sired by his/her dog?
often when it is someones first litter and they are lacking experiance they get the stud owner or a more experianced breeder to look at the puppies and access their qualities and faults and they would advise you on the current exceptable price for a littter of that quality.
More importantly you really should be looking into finding the best possible ,suitable homes wether they are show or pet homes that is far more important than the price they are willing to pay.
Most people have homes waiting for there puppies well in advance, i wouldnt consider mating one of my bitches unless I had GOOD homes lined up for the litter,I have no experiance of staffys but even as a inexperianced eye see some of the non breed standard looking dogs claiming to be a staffy ,you only have to visit the local rescue!
If you dont want your puppies to add to the rescue statistics spend more time researching suitable homes and writting a sales contract and less time worrying about the cash involved.
good luck placing your litter :)

If this is a genuine post then no , blues dont cost more and any other eye colour other than deep brown is a fault.

Snap Lel I think this could be a wind up?

Guest, when you say KC do you mean the The Kennel Club UK? Just with so many permutations out there ie Continental KC, United KC its confusing, especially Staffords with blue colouring and amber(?) eyes in the litter, sounds more likely to be APBTerrier or ISBTerrier breeding.

Ive got a feeling it is a wind up.Ive had blues before and sold them at the same price as the others they are no different than any other stafford. I hope the parents of these pups have both been eye tested ? As any good breeder would not breed from a dog thats not been All the best Gwen
