Topic Dog Boards / General / what size crate?
- By nails [gb] Date 14.02.04 13:09 UTC
hi everyone :)

i am looking at probably having to get a crate as guinness has decided now were in a new house when he gets left for a second hes going to chew everything (the front door/door frames etc) and as were renting were going to have a hefty bill to pay to repair it all when we leave so weve came to the conclusion we will have to buy a crate.

what size would people recommend for us to get? we dont have a huge house but he is a big dog for his age. he is 7 mths old towers over most full size border collies now and the vet has informed he is yet to grow more lol i just dont want to get one (probably getting one off ebay as they are cheaper and we havent the money to buy an expensive one) that he will grow out of too soon as we really wont be able to afford to keep replacing it unfortunately. on ebay they are in inches sizes but i have no idea what would be ideal for him? anyone have any ideas or have a big dog if you could tell me the size of yours and what dog you have then i can vision the size of them lol

thanks in advance guys!

All the large collies I know are fine in a 36 long x 24 wide x 27 inches tall crate.  I can get two Elkhounds in one this size for travelling, and they need the height being prick eared.  The next size up is the one used by Dobermans.

Hi Collette our pen is 47 long 35 wide 29 high(inches) We have a rough collie puppy 6 months The pen fits under mt staircase which is open Amy has her bed in it and toys plenty room in it for her to come out her bed and lie on the floor The pen is open on the top & she never makes to  climb over She only uses it if we are out and overnight we got it for her safety so she wouldn't climb the stairs overnight when we first got her We have tried leaving it open during the night now she is getting older but she still just goes in herself to her own bed

I have both a 36" one ( for in the car ) and a 42" one in the house for my Gordon Setter - you should be fine with a 36" one, go have a look at one set up if you can - most large pet stores should have them - I found the best price from Dogcage.net, the 36" is £46 inc P & p, the 42" is £56, they are extremely solid and well made, and the one in the car doesnt rattle at all! if you have the space in your house though, I would recommend getting a 42" one, so he has lots of space to stand, turnaround, strech out etc.
