I am looking for someone who feeds their sheltie on tinned food. I have an 18 week old male puppy and his toilet is quite soft. I am trying to find out how much he should be roughly getting. The last time I had a pup was about ten years ago so I am a bit out of practice.

Could you ask his breeder ? Failing that I would think about feeding a complete food rather than tinned to see if that will firm him up. Remember that the amounts given on the sides of packets/tins is often more than the dog actually needs

Thanks for that, breeder also feeds on compete food. I was using the chart from the pedigree chum tins/mixer but not so sure now it's the best option. Is compete food better for him than tinned chum?

Just to add my two-penn'orth, I've never known any dog that did very well on tinned chum. There are many better foods out there.

When you say didn't do well on tinned Pedigree chum, what do you mean by that if you don't mind me asking.

I've found that it tends to be far too rich for most dogs, and goes through them like a dose of salts. :(

My Rough Collies can't tolerate that food!  If would be much better to be guided by what your breeder recommends.

I always assumed Pedigree Chum was one of the best foods for dogs I guess I was wrong. Can anyone recommend any other make of food that would be good for my pup?

What was his breeder feeding him? If he was thriving on that, I would go back to it. Otherwise, Naturediet is supposed to be very good, and I would also consider Denes tinned food.

Thanks for that, I will contact the breeder and find out what he was on before I got him. Thanks again.

I would stay from any dog food you can buy in a supermarket.

hi steff,

I have a 16 week sheltie, and I feed him a mix of Pedigree puppy pouches and puppy biscouits to keep him "regular". He gets fed about 3 meals a day of  1/2 puch and a  big handful of biscuits. I tried to look at the guide on the packets but they seem completely unrealistic- so i just use my own judgement- if he eats everything straight away the I know he's hungry and i'll give him more- its worth remembering that Shelties are not particurly fussy with food- they don't usually wolf their food down as soon as you put it down, they will often just leave it and "pick".

Thanks for all the information on feeding my puppy. I have spoken to the breeder and I am now trying him on the food she recommended. I will just need to wait now and see how he gets on eating that.
