Topic Dog Boards / General / Are dogs welcome in pubs?
- By westielover2 [gb] Date 14.07.03 13:41 UTC
Am going camping at the weekend and I just wondered(I'm relatively new to this) whether you can take dogs into pubs or even a beer garden?
He's a Westie very docile he goes to sleep and does not bark or leap about?
We're going to Lincolnshire
Is the rule generally "No" apart from 1 or 2 exceptions?

It depends on the pub, but you can almost always take dogs into beer gardens. We've only been asked not to take our ridgie x boxer into one of our local pubs, everywhere else has been fine :)

WL - normally you can take your dog into a beer garden - just keep him under control:D - as for in the pub - depends on the pub - just ask at the bar first if it's OK then you won't upset anyone or be embarrassed if asked to leave:)
Traditional style pubs are usually the most dog friendly - the modern "theme" type - chain pub/bar less so.

theres a web site i think its called dog friendly where they highlight dog friendly pubs and hotels etc. Both my local pubs are boxer owners and are happy to have bradley in. But i do ask everytime just to be polite.

One local boxer is bared because he dug a two foot crater in his garden
(the landlords son).

We have just returned from a week in Cornwall and had no problems taking our Border Terrier into various pubs down there. In fact lots had signs on the doors saying dogs welcome and those that didn't seemed surprised to be asked as though it was obvious that you could. One lovely pub sold dog treats behind the bar.

She had a great time sat under the table getting fussed from everyone that walked past (most tried to feed her a sneaky crisp as well.)

Think as others have said, most dogs are welcome in beer gardens, I live in Lincolnshire, should you need any info on places, feel free to ask. Hope you all have a nice time.

Hi
My husband was asking the same question last week, as he passes our local every time he takes Poppy for a walk! (And the smell of Guinness is luring him!!)

We went for tea in the pub the day after (good excuse not to cook, eh!), and I asked the landlady....

She said that as they are a food premises, we shouldn't really, but if he wanted to sneak Poppy in the front way, instead of the food area way, and say that she's OK'd it if challenged, he could take her in as long as she was good!!

She also said "And don't blame me when he's gone for hours!!!!" :D

So, I think there are no hard and fast rules, apart from the obvious food hygiene thing: it depends on the pub, but ask anyway...they can only say "No"!

Sami

PS...Husband is now bemoaning the fact that we've lived here for 14 years, and he never knew he could have gone for a crafty pint!

Until it changed owners recently my favourite local pub had about four or five resident cats (with notices up not to feed them), a Great Dane and GSD and customers dogs were also welcome.

They now have dogs in their living area, no cats and dogs are still allowed in the bar :D (there is a restaurant if people don't want dogs around when they are eating but I can't see anything unhygenic in having a dog under the table).

Last year I took some Italian visitors and their Dobe there - he caused quite a stir as they are used to seeing mine with natural ears and tail and this lad was docked and cropped.

If you ask the landlord/lady if you can take the dog in they may allow it if its not an eating establishment then they cant we had a pub for quite a few years with a big beer garden we always put dog bowls outs with water in the hot weather and welcomed well behaved dogs inside.

PS have you got the membership yet ;) :)

cheers
- By Lea Date 13.02.04 21:56 UTC
Martindd, might help if you were a bit more specific to area. North Lincs is about 45 miles away from me, and so is South lincs.(I am in the middleof Lincs) so me somone telling you of a dopg freindly pub in Barton when you could live in Long Bennington would not work!!!!!!!

when it was my birthday on tuesday my mum took me to a lovely pub for lunch, we went in the dining room and was greeted by a lovely gsd bitch, she was very friendly and rolled over on her back for a tickle.she was a real cuty pie.
the landlady said she is lady friendly not to keen on men though, haha.
anyway when are food came she took the dog out of the dining room, but during our meal a cat jumped up on the table, it was laying on the window sill, at the back of the sofa seat.
that put my mum off as she didnt think that having a cat walking freely around a dining room , and jumping on the laid out tables was hygenic.

My sister feels the same, which is why she rarely visits me at home!  You get a cup of coffee here and no extra charge for the cat hairs.  They just seem to spread further than dog hair!.  Of course, the cat will always walk right across the table (and often sniff at the food) when any non cat lovers are visiting! ) :)  Wish we had more animal friendly places here.
bye

I work in a pub/restaurant we do let dogs come into the bar but only when food isnt being served due to strict health and safety laws. Most will let dogs into the beer gardens.

To be honest, if a pub won't let my dogs in, then they don't get my custom! The best pub I've ever known had customers' dogs in the bar and landlord's dogs in the kitchen.
:)

There are no laws against dogs being in an eating area, Mary, only in a food preparation area. My take on it is, if a landlord chooses not to allow dogs in because of their personal preference that is fine by me and I will be happy to use his establishment without dog in tow, but if they say they cannot because the law does not allow I always think I am better off not eating where they are not fully familiar with what the food and hygiene laws actually say. :)  Fortunately where we live at weekends there are several pubs that are happy to let you sit down and enjoy a meal with a dog tucked under the table, ah!! bliss :)
- By theemx [gb] Date 14.02.04 13:56 UTC
totally agree.....

so so many times i have been quoted this none existant law about dogs being in a place where food is served, that its illegal. Nope nope and nope its not, its JUST the food prep area! so yeah, if they quote that tripe at me (as EVERY pub in my town centre now has) i wont go in ANY of them!
Wish i lived with my dad again (thats the only reason id wish that , lol) pub = dogs,,,, last time i took a dog down there, Rocky ended up sat on a bar stool at the bar, being bought pork scratchings and the odd half of mild! arrrr my dog knows how to mingle with the locals!

Maybe you could all add details of any dog friendly pubs you know to Judes link above?

Suggest you get a copy of Pets Welcome, this lists pubs, hotels and other places where dogs are welcome.  We use our copy quite a lot and since we have six Cavaliers generally create our own tourist attraction.

You will find that the dog will be usually welcome in the bar areas and garden but not the restaurant for obvious reasons.

For those travelling further afield for holidays, would recommend the White Lodge in Cornwall (see adverts in Dog World or Pets Welcome).  This is a super place, dogs welcome everywhere except dining room, they are close to beaches and have a shower room for the dogs as you come off the beach.  When we were there, there were as many as 15 dogs in the bar of an evening and the barstaff came round with biscuits for them all.

We have generally found that when looking for places to stay, if the dogs sleep in travelling cages, then they are more likely to be welcome.

If anyone would like the names of 2 very good food pubs in Central London and in Whitby that welcome dogs I'll be happy to email details.
- By musiclife [gb] Date 17.02.04 15:59 UTC
I don't know if this has been said or not, but in my local pub, it depends on the dog and the owners of the dog. I think this is unfair, but that is the way it goes!
- By Maudlily [gb] Date 17.02.04 17:32 UTC
Seems very unfair to be choosy about what dogs are allowed in your local!  As long as owners have control over well behaved dogs they shouldn't be so selective.  Ho hum - cliques will form!
- By musiclife [gb] Date 17.02.04 17:34 UTC
I agree, it is unfair.
One dog even bit a person in the pub, and the landlord still alous the dog in and not others. it is horrible.
