i was shocked to find that all clumber spaniel's have HD, surely they must be in so much pain all the time!?

It depends on the degree of HD. Unless the joint is absolutely perfect, then any dog (or person) has HD. It depends how bad it is as to whether it affects their quality of life. As I understand it, the breed with the worst overall scores are Otterhounds ...

Think you are correct JG followed by the Clumber - think I would also be worried about the eyes that allway seem to be weeping.
