I saw an advert in exchange and mart for japanese mastiff puppies, I have never heard of these, what are they like? are they the same breed as the japanese tosa?

No! There should be no Tosas in this country as they are a banned breed. I think only one was ever in this country so, obviously it wasn't bred from. They are probably (God help us!) Akita X Mastiff.
