Is this the one, Lucy? :)

Click on "go to windows update, scan for updates" etc.. at the bottom.

Hi,

This might occur if you had a Service Pack installed and you reinstalled Windows XP without the Service Pack, or if you used System Restore to restore to a date before any Service Pack was installed.

Try installing the latest Service Pack for Windows XP here:

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

and see if that helps. :)

I will have a go but the download time maybe too long as I haven't got Broadband so will see if it works !!

I've only scanned this quickly  but it may help.

http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html

You could also do a Google for the error number  0x800A138F

Make sure your time/date are correct as well. :)

Failing that I'm talking rubbish! :D

Good luck. :)

Kath

I have found one of the most important things they have not put on the link you gave me, is sghould read as follows............

: if you are getting bored reading through all this then wait until your dear husband comes home, pour him a beer and let him do it : !! :p :p

Oh absolutely!  Now you know why I said   "I've only scanned this quickly" . ;) :D :D

 Well have sat here for two hours as the service pack was loading on , it was right at the end and the message came up saying that the upload had failed

What is interesting is that the last time I had any automatic updates which I have uploaded was the 28 November ??

I wonder why that is ? Any ideas folks ?

Flip I will wait til this evening and do it again with a glass of wine or two !! :)

Go for broadband.you won't regret it. That is if you can get it where you live. I was on dial up costing £14.99 per month and now I pay just a fiver extra each month and get Tiscali broadband 5x faster than dialup.. Go for it then your download times will be greatly reduced. No more engaged tones.no connection time limits.(most dial up connections are limited to 2hours max then you need to reconnect). broadband lets you make and receive phone calls on your phone while you are connected to the interweb. that is if you use your primary phone line to connect to the interweb.

As for updates if you are using XP go to CONTROL PANEL and click on SYSTEM then the automatic updates tab at the top then set  updating as you want.
