When I first got my computer a couple of years ago my brother loaded MSN messenger on. Everytime I log onto the internet it comes on now. I upgraded to MSN 6.0 a few months ago howerver....when I start the internet up the old verison starts and I have to physically click on MSN 6.0 for it to close the old version down. I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me how I can get rid of the old version and stop it coming on automatically and keep the new Msn6.0 so I have to physically log on? Thanks in anticipation :-D

I haven't got MSN, so I'm not sure if you can manually removing it, have you tried un-installing the old version? some of what Bill Gates thinks you need is pretty well em-bedded in windows,
Click on START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL when this opens click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS and have a look on the list that comes up for the MSN version you want to remove.

Hi Eddie,
I've just come across your problem here. I too had the same problem as you. And tried to uninstall the OLD msn using ADD/Remove in Windows. But it is pre-stalled as part of windows and would not uninstall.
I tried to live with it but like you each time I connected to the interweb it would sign in automatically. And then sign me out of MSN 6. What a pain.
It's not like you can remove your user name either. In the end I downloaded a small program called FRESH UI which is a free tweak program for altering hidden settings within Windows enviroment. One of these settings is to disable MSN Messenger.
Which I did and now I only have MSN6 running all the time. No more login/out problems with the built in MSN Messenger.
If your not sure be carefull 'cos some of these settings can upset your PC and cause it to malfunction or not boot at all. If your gonna use it then just have it for the MSN problem and ignore the rest, PC should be fine then.
Just seen your concern about losing contacts list. As these are not stored on your PC but on the MSN servers they are recoverable. Just log back into MSN 6 and they will re-appear.
\hope this helps.

No you shouldent loose your contacts as if you were to use a public computer you would still be able to chat to all your freinds
I would say write them all down . i had 150contacts fortunalt i wrote them all down about 2 weeks later msn upgraded and i lost them all i was so glad i wrote them down :)

Just make sure you keep your name and log-in password the same, if you change your details by re-registering, you won't retrieve your lists.

You won't loose any of your contacts as long as you sign in using the same username and password, your address book isn't stored on your computer it's stored at the msn server.
Whoops just realised somebody has already answered ..............sorry :-)
