I am so unhappy, cant stop crying :( My Goldie underwent emergency surgery last night, and I cant believe we came so close to losing him. He became ill on Saturday night, just vomitted the once and was feeling a bit sorry for himself. He was again ill on Sunday morning and refused to eat all day. Yesterday he was just down in the dumps, but still would not eat and would not drink anything either so at tea-time off I went to the vets. thinking that he had just got an upset tummy or something similar. Things happened so fast I am still realing now. He had x-rays which showed that he had a large lump in his intestines but the could not identify what it was. I was asked If he was a stone swallower or a chewer of anything he shouldnt. Which he is not, my other dog is and I have to watch him like a hawk, so at 7.30 last night he went under the knife and they fished out a sock, he was very dehydrated and the intestine had swollen to double its size and he was bleeding internally from burst blood vessels. :( This morning he is still on a drip and very poorly. Vet said he is lucky to be alive, good job I took him when I did, I would have lost him if I had left him any longer. Socks will now be totally banned in our house, everyone will have to go bare foot and like it.

Thank you for your replies, I dont know what to do with myself at the moment :( although I have other dogs in the house the place seems so empty without my big blonde fella, he is such a gentle dog and has such a wonderful nature. :) So out of character for him to eat a sock?? He didnt even do this when he was a pup!! Now Jack (flatcoat) He would eat anything if it was not nailed down!!! Dont understand, cant understand why its Murphy. Sorry wittering on, I am begining to suspect foul play. he would only have eaten that sock if it had been stuffed with something really tasty.

Thank you for putting a smile back on my face :) I suppose I am being a bit paranoid arnt I!! Its just I fell out with the neighbour last week when the fence blew down and dogs got into her garden. She is a bit of an old whinger and doesnt like my dogs, my cat or my kids. I dont think she likes anything except whinging. Well as it was my husbands sock, I think you may be right with the smelly foot :) not that I am going to blame him as it is him that has to sign the cheque !!!

Hi Mason
So sorry to hear about your big lad! What an ordeal for you both. Thank goodness you took him to the vet when you did though. If he made it through the operation he's over the worst hurdle - and hopefully well on his way to a speedy recovery.
Fingers crossed for you both
Jo :)

I heard a similar story in our vets this week of a lab who ate the "netting" that surrounds a joint of meat. Bad news.
Good luck for a swift recovery.

Hi Terri, We are all well, and the dogs are just great :) Jack and Jay have grown into lovely dogs and are a pleasure to own. Im just worried about Murphy at the moment. Hopefully I will see you on March 5th as my tickets for crufts arrived in the post on Friday. So I will finally get to meet you (if you are going to be there). Time drags so when you are waiting for news, I just wish the phone would ring and some one would say "you can come and get him now" But i dont think he will be home today some how. I have been following your show successes either on your breeder page or in the dog papers. Chase looks lovely, any puppies? no dont answer that I have enough to handle at the moment. and yes I would be tempted :) Its lovely to hear from you and I hope you are all well. :) Sarah

I have tonight been over to the hospital to see my murphy and I am pleased to report that he is making very good progress :) He is of his drip now, and although he is in a fair bit of pain, he managed to stand up when he saw me and wag his tail :) I feel alot better now that I have seen him, abit disapointed that I could not bring him home but maybe tomorrow :) so all is well. socks are still banned though, although everyone thinks I am joking, I am not. thank you for all your kind replies, I did lose it a bit earlier today, and it was the smelly foot remark that pulled me back to reality. :D Sarah

Fingers are still crossed here!

Hello there
I'm so sorry to hear what you've been going through and so pleased that it looks like Murphy's going to pull through OK. Have you heard whether you can bring him home today yet - I do hope so, you must really miss him.
Best wishes, thinking of you both.

Hes home, at last, I have my big blone fella back :D Hes come home with lots of different medication to take and special diet food so as not to put too much strain on his intestines and he has a rather large wound on his tummy, other than that he is OK :D I never want to see another sock as long as I live !!!!! It was a very expensive sock thats all I can say !!!!! but the important thing is that hes OK and he is home :D I am so happy I cant stop grinning :D Not allowed to exersise for 10 days, just rest and recouperation, lots of love, cuddles and pampering is what he is going to get :D thanks all. Sarah :D very happy bunny
