Topic Dog Boards / General / Have you ever heard of this? Dogs Water
- By ROSIEDOLLYJAZ [gb] Date 10.02.04 19:48 UTC
Hello
I was told once that it's best to give dogs water that had been standing for a while instead of straight from the tap??, apparently it's better for them as not so much chlorine then?

I do this all the time now, has anyone else ever heard of this??, or am I just wasting my time!! ha-ha

I dont know about the less chlorine, as chlorine does not evaporate. But, it might be the same as humans. Water out the tap isd not good as too cold!!!!!!!!!!! #Something to do with cold on the stomach.
Although, when I put fresh water down for the dogs, there is a fight for who gets there first!!!!!!!!!! They dont like water that has been standing for more than about 8 hours!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that chlorine (or something in the water ??) does evaporate or something :) as when we had tropical fish, the advice was (unless using special chemical additive) to stand tap water in buckets overnight before using it in the tanks :) It's a few years ago now, so can't remember the exact details. Anyway - as Lea said, I'm sure that it doesn't do the dogs any harm - mine love the fresh water too :D

They do prefer water that has been standing or rainwater but I don't know why.

Yes, you're right. :) Chlorine is a gas and does evaporate. That's the reason your supposed to leave new ponds to stand for a few days before putting fish in. Dogs have a keen sense of smell so it's not surprising they don't like the chlorine in fresh tap water.

Oooooppssssssss sorry :(
Although, I must have strange dogs, as they drink it straight out of the outside tap, and out of the jug when I top up the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do they hold their noses while they're drinking? :D

Bess doesn't like water in her bowl unless it's stood for a while but she'll drink it from the hose pipe when I'm watering the garden. She likes it when I wiggle the hose around and she has to try and catch the water!!

Mine too Lea :)  Always have a drink straight away when I change their water and that comes straight out of the tap.

I don't know about fresh water, but Copper seems to like the toilet bowl water better than anything I can offer him.  :)
Kirra, is content with anything wet, including her favorite, ice cubes.

I do not let my dogs drink any tap water, they either have bottles spring still water, or collected rain water, I just do not trust the chemicals. I would not drink it myself, so I do not expect my dogs to

interesting topic about water.
on the advice of my vet i am still giving my 14 week old gsd bitch boiled water.
i let it cool in a milk bottle and then when its cooled give it her.
ive never heard of this before and just wondered if anyone has?
if this is right then how long do you give a pup boiled water for?

Never boiled water for any of my dogs; by preference they would drink rainwater as the water is very hard around here; they also prefer puddles :D

Mine will go straight past her bowl and drink outside from a swing that's collected rainwater! :)

Poppy (when allowed upstairs!) loves to sneak into the bathroom and drink water from the shower bowl, soap and all :-)

I kept accusing my OH of turning into a dribbling old man because the toilet seat was always wet. Turned out our Akita has decided the toilet is his own private water bowl!!!!

my 2 labs prefer the fish pond.

I keep chinchillas and it is a known fact among breeders (although ive never read it in any book) that tap water can make chinchillas sterile, mine have always been given either boiled or bottled water, I now have a water filter which me, the cats, the chins and even the snake have our water from and no doubt when I get a dog his water will be filtered too.

(go on now someone prove me wrong about the tap water and making chinchillas sterile theory :D :D )

My dogs choose to drink from puddles, cattle troughs, fish ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, the tops of cow pats, used bathwater, toilet, buckets, etc.  The more disgusting it looks, the better, so I don't really see the need to boil their water!

I drink tapwater and so do my children and dogs!

(sorry, I know nothing about chinchillas.  My neighbour has one I feed when she goes away.  He has tap water but he doesn't have a mate!)

I have ALWAYS boiled my dogs water,i doubt the chlorine would be good for them,i also heard that they can smell it.
I keep a big bottle of boiled water in the fridge so i can always top their bowls up,altho i have to change their water 3 times a day as they have long hair and tend to get dirt on their beards which washes off in their water bowl it ends up looking like muddy water  My dogs appreciate the cool water especially in this hot weather(Australia) it is going to be 43 celcius here tomorrow, yuk!

Strangely my dog only drinks water straight from the tap with the fresh tang of chlorine  or from the yukkiest puddle available    If the water has been in his bowl for more than 5 minutes he makes an awful fuss !!

If you are worried/interested about what is in your water supply you can ring your local water board and request a free printout of your water quality.  Fishkeepers often do this.  You may be surprised when comparing the printout to those bottles of springwater ;)

In the latest issue of my breed's newsletter, we are advised to avoid giving our dogs bottled mineral water because it contains higher levels of minerals than normal - bad for their longterm health.
