Before xmas my neighbours rotty died at a year old of cardiomyopathy, the breeder has stopped breeding from the dogs parents and has offered a replacement pup which is arriving at the end of this month. They had problems with the rotty before making so much noise as they kept her outside and had a complaint from the council so they have been out and bought a jack russel bitch, they've had her for about 3 weeks, she is now 13 weeks old and they plan on keeping them (both bitches)outside together while they go off to work all day. They have been told that the jack will keep the rotty in check and basically do their work for them!!I can see trouble brewing but please tell me i'm wrong, can two so completely different breeds live together in harmony, whilst being left together all day outside?

All i can say is that 2 dogs make twice as much noise as 1!! not less

Who knows?   I reckon you might be right.  Probably end up with two dogs barking all day but then again they might be fine.  Personally I wouldn't leave two dogs of such different sizes together at all and I wouldn't have 2 pups together anyway.  I'll probably invoke the wrath of a few people here but cats would be better company for the evening if you work all day.

The worst case senario is to come home to a dead and part eaten JR! Possibly the best they can hope for is complaints about TWO dogs barking all day.

The responsibility for a dog rests on their shoulders and they cannot foist this off onto the shoulders of another dog!! Quite frankly this is irrisponsible and I think you are right to be worried.

Arr, That explains it! ;)

Totally agree with John,

I'm sorry to say that all the jack russels I have met have been noisy barkers, both parson russels and the short legged type - Its only to be expected, they are terriers and will bark at the slightest noise (the only terrier that doesn't seem to do this is the Beddly ;) ).  And rotties are territorial and guarding so if kept outside will learn to bark at anyone going past.  Personally I think that the Jack Russel  will just spark the Rottie off.  Add to this that when frustrated and excited (and barking does seem work some dogs up) two dogs can start fighting then I think this is a disaster in the making.

If these owners haven't got the time to train their dog not to bark why have one ?  Why not get a really good picture of one for the wall and then have the dog when circumstances change?

Dill, you are a star!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wondered why Gemma had this annoying habit of barking at anything that moved!!!!!! She is a Rottie cross.
I dont mind too much(apart from when she barks and jumps at the window and knocks off a planter I have just bought ggggggrrrrrrrr) as, I cant see anyone trying to get into my house. Blooming good guard dog!!!!!!

I know what you mean Lea :)

There's a rottie in a house I regularly have to pass and he jumps at the window barking like mad, then runs upstairs to get a better view (still barking).  Trouble is he's driving the people on both sides nuts :(  but then he's alone all day

Our old cairn used to rush out to the back garden barking like crazy - I always thought it was so that anything big and dangerous would have scarpered before finding out how small she was :D

Gemma, is alone all day 3 days a week, and 5 hours one day a week, but her and Beano are in a kennel and run  half way down the garden. Both have got used to nighbours so sont bark at them!!!!!!!!!! But when in living room with me. eeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkk, couldnt imagine what it would be like if they were both left in the house on their own all day, poor neighbours.
I rtegularily check with my neighbour to make sure they dont bark too much
I even have a building site 2 doors down and they dont bark at the builders.

Hi,

Well Dill you are almost right about JRT's. I've two they are bro's, 17mths and neutered.
My daughters, Sqweg, is the most irritating barker you could ever wish to meet. It's that horrible yippy bark that gets right up your nose. My daughter is 16 and I make her take the little sh*t to bed with her because if he's up there with her he doesn't bark. Just sleeps on his back snoring and keeping us awake anyway. The dogs are very rarely left and if they are it's only for an hour or so because there is always someone due to come home from work/school etc.

Now 'Syd, who's mine neve....(never say never) hardly ever barks is a dreamboat. He just looks at Sqweg as if he's a loonytoon.

As for leaving them together. I leave my Mastiff, Bullmastiff & the 2 JRT's on the odd occassion(sp) they are left, together in my kitchen. Fingers crossed up to press never had any probs. There were a few 'spats' when the 'hierarchy' was being established but no major probs  even then.

Oh!!! I forgot to mention the cat door is in the kitchen and I used to come home to 3 cats sat on the freezer taking 'tea & bikkies' with their canine couterparts as well. (The cats no longer go out as one of them was stolen).

Have just bought a 'Mikki' for Sqweg. He doesn't like it but at least he's not Pi***ng off the neighbours.
Not that my neighbour did complain she's a lovely woman.

Hi D4wn,

Your JRT sounds a real sweety :) and your soo lucky that he isn't yappy, most of the ones I've known have been very noisy :(   Your dogs sound wonderful and very well brought up, but thats the whole point, the person who's getting the dogs doesn't appear to have the time to bring them up well and is going to leave them unsupervised for long periods, this didn't work for his last rottie and, given that nothing is going to change, is hardly likely to be a success this time.

Dill,

That's what I was saying ,my pup Syd is great, my daughters Sqweg( they're bro's) is a different story.
We live about 300yds (as crow flies) from the river. My partner says 'Oh! a mouse has farted down by the river', when he first said this I thought he'd gone off his trolley. Then I realised it was every time Sqweg barked.
Sqweg does though, he barks at absolutely nowt. I've tried telling him to quiet. I've tried spray bottles, newspaper, keeping him with us, I've tried evedrything I can think of but nothing works. I have to send him to bed with my daughter so he doesn't wind the others up at night. My neighbour is fantastic but it p***es me off when they all go off on one.

My two cavs and springer very rarely bark.  The two yorkshire terriers well what can I say.  Bejamin has a deep bark and Toby yap yap yap.  Sets them all off.

A JR never met one that does not bark for England, but perhaps should not tar them all with the same brush before I get into trouble.
