i went to look a a westie at a ladys house but i am 90% sure she is opperating a puppy farm. are they illegal? and what can  or should i do? (i didnt buy the puppy) but i carnt sleep for worring about him he was so sweet and inocent i feel awlfull for leaving him there.

Puppy farms usually offer several breeds of puppies for sale, you don't see the parent dogs, as the puppies are sometimes bought in to be sold on, and are often not Kennel Club registered and the parents may not have had relevant health checks, and no, puppy farms are not illegal.
What was it that made you suspect the lady may be a puppy farmer?

i thought it was suspicious beacause of a number of reasons ill list a few
the advert was on the internett but there was only a mobile number no address or land line
the pup wasnt at the address she said a friend (steve) would bring him a round as steves mom who breads the dogs was to old for visitors.
she said the lady never registers the pups with the kc.
the puppy book had the names and dates of vacines but she had no vets details.
the pedigree for the puppy looked very old and worn and you couldsee where she had put white tape over the date as if she was just photocpying it!
as we were leaving my partner saw a man peeping through a door at the back of the house, he had been there all the time watching us, my partner acknowleged him and he opened the door. he introduced himself as steve. but he had keprt out the way so we wouldnt see him!
the dog was only 10 weeks but was very dirty and smelly he was not being looked after.
she said if we wanted the dog we didnt need to leave a deposit just call if and when we wanted to collect him.
she said she only accepted cash payments on collection
it all seemed to strainge, i dont know the first thing about the kc or pedigree's or evenpuppy farms i just know something was not right!

Well done for going with your gut and wqalking away.  If only more people would then they would find theri pups didn't sell, and either stop or do things properly.

This is a common practice amongst puppy farmers. Putting pups in a private house to sell them.  Sometimes they'll have a bitch of the same breed there and say it is mum when clearly it isn't.  Well done for walking away.

It's difficult to walk away but you will have saved yourself a lot of expense & heartbreak in the long run. The only way to stop these people will be when there is no market for their stock.

If you are looking for details of a couple of good reputable and reasonably well know breeders please e-mail me preidie@yahoo.com and I will give you some numbers to try.

I always say to people if they find a breeder and are not sure contact the breed clubs secretary for some advice.  Most good breeders are members of the Breed Club. It is so had to tell the difference sometimes between a well bred puppy and a not so well bred puppy so good sound references and checks are vital.
