We will be breeding my bitch when she comes into her next season, she will be 3yrs in june 04 and it will be her first litter. i just was wondering how many pups she could have being her first litter. She did have her eyes tested yesterday and i am pleased to say they are all clear nad she also is going for her hipscore very soon along side my other dog so please dont think i would breed her without a low score.  so if anyone could just give me a example what to expect so i do not have a shock if she had nine or so.  if you could also give me some information about a scan when would this be done, how much does this cost, and a little bit more info. would be greatly appreciated.   thankyou.

Firstly it depends what breed she is, it does differ quite alot,

I recommend you read up a little beforre you commit your self to breeding.

Have you done any showing with your dog/bitch, the reason I ask is if you have had her hip/eyes tested and they come back clear does not give you good reasons to breed off them both, they may have other more visable faults which may not be a good idea to breed from

Have you studied both the dogs pedigrees to see if breeding these 2 dogs together would
better the breed and produce good pups and breed out faults

all these details and many more need to be considerd before you think about breeding good stock

hope this helps

Hi Guest and welcome!

If you join Champdogs - we don't bite - honest (contrary to what some posters might allege :D :D :D)
You can then post and ask as many questions as you like!   We have all had to start at one time or another - and you are doing your homework and planning ahead, which is good.  Do let us know what breed you have - there is bound to be a Champdogger with experience of your breed on here.

As general advice, I would advise that you buy "The book of the bitch" - you can get it from Amazon - it really is the "breeder's bible"!!

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Regards
Margot

Hi guest it is possible to give a breed average but even that is not very helpful as bitches differ a good deal in the number of viable eggs available at any one season. It is said that the fertility drops off as they get older as it does in human but I have not seen or heard of any surveys done to prove this, may be someone else will know. Join the forum and let us know the breed, we can then give you the norm and let you know of anything else we know off that may need looking into.
