Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / stud fees

I have had an experienced breeder of Bulldogs approach me to use my British Bulldog as a Stud.
They have visited our home and are very keen, due to our dogs excellent pedigree and his appearance and temprement etc.
As a novice, I am not sure how much I should charge for using my dog as a Stud.
Is the price of a puppy, or Pick of the Litter appropriate ?

Please help .... Thanks,
Jodie

Jodie, I would think very carefully before you allow your dog to be used as a stud for what will possibly be only one occasion. I'm not a breeder but one of my previous dogs accidently mated when a so called friend bought their in season bitch to my house. It unsettled the dog for the rest of his life and caused me nothing but trouble, what had been a home loving dog became very unsettled at the first smell of any bitches, scent marked any houses we went too, he was a night mare until I eventually had to have him castrated to settle things down a bit. I agree Ingrid. That's why the stud dogs that we use are usually kennelled. I would never suggest that a pet dog be used at stud for that very reason. It's not fair to the dog or the owner.

Hi Jodie

I have three Cocker Spaniels dogs and one has been used at Stud. It hasn't changed him at all and he and my older dog still get on fine and they all live in the house together, no scent marking or anything.

I think it is a personal choice but one that you must give a lot of thought to. Everybody does have differing opinions on this subject and I respect what the others have said, but don't let it sway you either way by what has been said it is totally up to you and how you think your dog will behave after the event.

With regard to the Stud price I think this is likely to be quite high as Bulldog puppies do not come very cheap. If you would like another addition to your family then taking a puppy from the mating would be lovely.

I hope this gives you the other side.

Best wishes
