OK, so I posted a quick message in the searching forum a few days ago to no avail... I've also spoken to more breeders than I care to remember this last week, again to no avail.
I cannot for the life of me find a smooth-coat female Chihuahua pup. Anywhere. Is it common knowledge that there ARE NO SMOOTH-COAT CHIHUAHUA PUPPIES at the moment or something? I'm pretty sure I've contacted every source possible over these last few/months weeks (with more effort than ever applied these last two weeks), but if anyone has any suggestions for places/people I may not have tried, I'd be really grateful! Also, if anyone knows a good Chihuahua-specific forum or any note-worthy sites (or active Chihuahua clubs), that'd be great!
(I'm in Lancashire, if that's any use...)
I'm assuming you have looked on the Champdogs Breeders Index? Have you tried to contact any Chi clubs, or the kennel club?? Sorry can't be of more assistance, they're not my breed, so just trying to help.
Have you considered taking on a rescue, then www.dogpages.org.uk may be able to help, or click here to take you straight there

I've tried rescues, clubs, breeder indexes, etc. - all to no avail! I must say, it gets quite disheartening after a while... Every one of the above has either turned up nothing at all, or just long-coats, which aren't what I'm looking for at all.
Obviously, if anyone knows of any smaller clubs or breeder indexes that I may not have seen, that'd be great! I've also tried a few "big names" - toy breed judges and the like, all who've said they couldn't help... (I'll be calling the Kennel Club again tomorrow - I've had trouble getting hold of the right people!)
Thanks anyway for the info Liberty, much appreciated!
And as a sidenote, how much should I expect to pay a reputable breeder for a pup? Looking back through available pups from last year and the year before, prices seemed to span from "reasonable!" (£250) to "what?!" (£800) - is this sort of variation normal??

Matt, dont want to be too critical, but perhaps your approach is not quite right? With a lot of breeds it is not a case of finding a pup, but getting put on a list. I think this is the case with Chis, and certainly finding a bitch will be a lot harder than a dog. You have to appreciate that as a breed they have small (no pun intended, numerically small) litters. Breeders are often unwilling to let pups go until they see how they will grow and develop for the ring, a tiny bitch may be retained for showing, a larger bitch to breed from. You have to be on someones list to get a pet pup who one way or the other has not made the grade (bite incorrect perhaps). then there is the price issue. £250 is incredibly cheap. And given the difficulty in actually finding a pup, you will be looking a lot closer to the top end of the price range you mentioned. I can put you in touch with a couple of extremely reputable breeders in Lancs., dont think either have litters expected just at the moment, but you might get on a waiting list after a 'telephone interview'.
bye
Gwen
Hi Matt
As I mentioned they're not my breed, but make sure the parents have had all relevant health checks for the breed, make sure you see the parent/s, well at least Mum, and check they are KENNEL CLUB registered. As to price, well raising puppies is rarely something that is done for profit (i.e. there isn't any, after raising the pups well), but often you get what you pay for..Good luck in your search

Gwen, thanks for that. I probably should have made an effort to get on the lists earlier, but I think I was too optimistic about the ability to find a breeder with pups ready to go! Guess I was wrong! As much as I hate to admit it, I never realised that tracking down some Chi pups would be this difficult...
Regarding the breeders; chances are I've already spoken to them if they're "known" breeders - I seem to have spoken to everyone who breeds Chiuahua pups within a 250 mile radius! Still, if you could pass me the details, that'd be fab...
Truely, thanks for the links. I hadn't seen the epupz.co.uk ad before, so I've emailed about that... the others however are either for male pups, have expired, or are simply too far away... Thanks again though, hopefully the one I've emailed will get me somewhere (assuming they're KK registered)!

Hi Matt,
Have been following your plight! Just wondered if you have had any more luck in looking for one! (I have also been looking everywhere with no luck at all, so know just how you are feeling!!!)

Hi Joolsxxx, glad to know I'm not the only person searching high and low for a Chiuahua pup! I've got a couple of leads (excuse the pun!), one thanks to Gwen and another through a friend, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that a nice little girl turns up somewhere...
Unfortunately it's become quite apparent that only male puppies are "generally available" right now, so maybe I'll settle for a boy instead. As long as a get a preferable colour with a nice temperament and good parents, I'll be happy!
Where abouts are you? If I find any pups which are in your area, I'll give you a heads up!

Hi there i actually breed chihuahuas and no im not offering them for sale i have lists of people waiting. The reason they are becoming more difficult to get hold of is that since the kennel club decided that the longhaired and shorthaired breeds should be classed as different breed standards the people that breed them are keeping the shorthaired bitches back .As the long haired chihuahuas are quite easily obtainable providing you look in the right place or are on a waiting list. The smooth haired however are becoming increasingly difficult to get hold off due to there being a very high demand for them. Most breeders have many litters in advanvce spoken for SO its not that easy to get hold of a smooth haired chihuahua especially a bitch. But if youare put on a waiting list and are succesfully vetted you may have some luck
