Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / How long for KC papers to come through

Hi, I bought a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel two weeks ago. The breeder had the pups in his home and said that is where he bred them. He said they were KC reg, when I collected my pup a week later the papers were not there, the breeder said they would come through to my home address in 6-8 weeks time, is this normal? He also said the pups had been vet checked and had a clean bill of health my pup has a hernia. I paid an awful lot of money have I been ripped off? I adore my new pup and don't want to part with him now.

Did you see your puppy's mother ? Normally you should get a pedigree, diet sheet, insurance & the KC papers if they have arrived

You can check with the KC if you know the name of your puppy's mother to see if a litter has been registered

My last puppy hadn't been registered when I got him as his breeder was waiting the KC confirming his father had been made up to a Champion before registereing the litter(his father won all three CC's after mating my boy's mother)& also I know the breeder very well & an trust her

If the puppies were advertized as KC registered & they are not it is up to the Trading Standards to persue the breeder through the courts

As to the hernia they are quite common & as long as it is not really huge or large it's nothing to worry about

As to price Cavaliers are a very commerial breed & you can be asked for really silly prices for a pet bred puppy whose parents haven't had any health checks

If your puppy's is KC registered the health checks will be on the registration certificates

Why would you have to part with your puppy ?

Thank you for your explanation. I thought the hernia would be a massive problem and that my pup would'nt survive. My vet has explained that my pup can have an operation to fix it when he is 6 months old. As to the mother of my pup I did see her and she looked lovely and was friendly but the breeder did'nt give me her name or reg number.

Trisha there is a specializt cavalier forum here if you want to ask about your dogs papers they might recognize the pedigree names

You will have to join though & then you can message the moderators who are very experienced Cavalier owners

Trisha

I don't want to worry you but I have just registered a litter and the papers came back within a week.  As far as I am aware the KC send the papers to the breeder not the new owner - after all how would the KC know who the owner is?

Sorry!!

It used to take the KC ages to get registrations sorted out sometimes, but they are turning them round in under 10 days now.  They will certainly go to the breeder, who will have to send them on to you.  Did you get a pedigree when you got the pup?  If so you can contact the KC on Monday, give the date of birth, breed and parents names, and they will tell you if the litter has been registered, or if they can see any problems with a registrations.  It is always advisable to get in writing details of any paperwork to follow, so if the worst happens you have evidence for a smalls claims case  (sorry to sound a bit un-hopeful)  I do know that some breeders seem to have a nasty habit of not sending of registrations until they have sold the pups - possibly waiting for the cash to come in and pay for the reg!
bye

Surely tho, even if the registration documents aren't back there's nothing to stop you being given the pedigree certificate with your pup?? and, if the breeder is genuine, a receipt to say KC documentation to follow ?

Sorry to muddy the waters here but it just seems the logical thing to do (to me anyway)

Have you called the breeder back?

There was a slight delay when I registered my litter and the papers weren't back when the first puppy was due to go at eight weeks so I offered the new parents the choice of waiting before they took their puppy but they choose not to so I gave them the copy of the registration form that I had sent and a signed declaration that I would send the papers on as soon as they came through.  They took only a couple more days and I sent them straight on as soon as I got them.

To be honest, they lost mine, I had to send a duplicate then they found the original and charged me twice but the whole thing still only took two weeks and three days from sending them to getting them back.

Try calling your breeder and ask for the pedigree name of the mum so that you can ring the Kennel Club yourself.

Good luck.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I am going to give the breeder a call and ask for the parents kc names. I feel a little foolish now as books and websites all say you must make sure you have the papers before you leave, it's just so hard when you are presented with this little bundle of fluff you have been planning to have for so long-oh well you live and learn. Cheers everyone

Mine don't always go with the KC papers, but they have the pedigree and a signed document to say that he papers are to follow.  THe papers would not be sent straight to  your house, so it doesn't sound good.  Good luck and I hope that you have many wonderful years with your baby.
