Hi
My brother and his girlfriend have just moved into there new house, they did have 3 cats (2 he acquired from a friend who moved to canada) one of the 2 has run away the other spends most of her time in the garden, the 3rd cat has gone back to there old house where there old next door neighbour is looking after him. So they have 1 cat left. The house they have moved into needs some decorating attention, however after decorating they were seriously thinking of getting a dog/puppy. They would like to rehome a greyhound(maybe) and we were wondering if there were any websites on rehoming greyhounds(he has had a greyhound before who sadly had to be put to sleep at the age 13years)
They would like on that is good with children (as his girlfriend/fiance has a 12 year old daughter) and one that is good with other dogs/cats.

Thanks
Louise

Be very, very, very careful....

It IS possible to get a greyhound that will settle with cats but usually only with very dedicated, committed and CONSISTENT training. You have to bear in mind that an ex-racing greyhound will probably have had the normal dog instincts to chase abused terribly by the industry (the 'training' varies from teasing them relentlessly with squeaky cuddly toys, enclosing them in a rabbit field - driving them crazy, being given live rabbits to 'play' with etc). With this in mind, it is understandable why greyhounds find it impossible to stop chasing when they are homed into normal society and this behaviour suddenly becomes anti-social.

I would recommend one that has never raced, either through injury or as a 'non-chaser'. These dogs have not spent years being praised & rewarded for chasing and catching as they never competed and as they are normally very young, stand a better chance of being trained. Avoid dogs that have raced for a long time and / or been in kennels for years and / or have never, ever lived in a home.

If your brother still wants one, the best greyhound rescue site around is www.rgtcroftview.co.uk
