I have a chocolate labrador pup and before taking him for a hip score etc at the vets i want information on how to start taking him out to stud e.g advertising, what do i need to do to the dog before studing him and the going rate etc for the service?
Hello guest,
I would very much agree with what has already been said. You should only breed your dog to benefit the breed in general. Although we all love our dogs (me included) and think that they're the best thing since sliced bread, that is not a good enough reason for breeding. If your dog was a show champion or a Field Trials champion, then fair enough, but there are far too many labradors, especially chocolate ones out there that have been bred without taking this into account.
That said, if you do go ahead, he will need to have his hips scored and his eyes checked and certainly his hips probably couldn't be done until at least 1 year. Being a stud dog can also alter a dogs personality. I am sure that one of the other Lab breeders will be on soon to give more advice about this, but as I understand it, a dog that is a 'proper' stud dog, ie that is his main 'job', will expect to mate with bitches regularly, but a pet dog that is used once or twice, can start 'looking' for bitches when he is out with you and could also start 'marking' inside the house.
Your best point of call would be to speak to the breeder about it all- but please think long and hard about it.
There are thousands of labradors out there who are fabulous pets, but thats what they should stay-pets.
I'm sorry if you think that I'm being very negative about it all- I don't wish to sound horrible but as others will probably post later, it really isn't something to take lightly. You will share responsibility for bringing into the world a litter of pups that may not be good examples of the breed.
Sorry to sound so negative, but there you are.
