I have a standard dachshund that came to me from breed rescue and was VERY overweight.  He has been on Wafcol Rite Weight for four years and that has helped get his weight down along with increasing exercise.  The problem is - he's getting on a bit and I think it's time to go onto a senior food.  There's millions of them!!!!!!  Any recommendations for a senior diet (dried perferable) that isn't high in calories but is going to give him what he needs.

If he is doing well on the rite weight I would keep him on that.  Wafcol do a Veterna/Senior version too.

If you give them a ring and speak to their nutritionist they can tell you:D  Always found them most helpful in the past.

Joe, lots of dry foods do light / senior varietys now.

I saw a dog yesterday that made me really sad.  :(  It was a man in Worcester with a daschund who was so obese his belly was dragging the floor as he walked, it was such a sight & I felt so sorry for the dog, I just wondered if his belly was sore. :(

No -it wasn't me and Norm!! Mind you - when I got him through the breed rescue ( from a breeder I might add) his poor tum did drag along the ground.  He wouldn't walk for more than 100 yards and slept for England.  I wouldn't say he's exactly skinny now but at least he looks like a dog and not a seal on a lead.

So don't condemn that bloke you saw - he might have got his from breed rescue too.

It did actually cross my mind that he may not have been to blame for his overweight friend. He may have been walking it for someone else, or like you say he may have just taken the dog on. Over the years, I've seen lots of fat dogs - I've seen lots of very overweight dogs & I've also seen lots of obese dogs, but this one takes the biscuit (no pun intended :-D) He looked a happy dog - but really was struggling to walk.
Hopefully he'll put him on a diet - if he isn't already on one.  :)

My mother has got two minature hairy ones and I keep telling her they are getting fat but she won't hear anything of it :rolleyes: She does however take great glee in pointing out to me on when I am going to loose some weight !
