Hi everyone my name is mike and i am new to the site.
My german shepherd bitch was mated and tied on the 19th of january they only mated once and he would not do it again.
I was wondering how long should i wait before taking her for a scan this is her first litter but her 3rd heat she has had a phantom pregnancy before and i was just wanting to make sure she is in whelp so i can get things sorted for her before the pups arrive any help would be greatly appreciated oh she was standing for the male 7-9days into her heat cycle.

Usually a scan is done at about 3-4 weeks.
Only getting 1 mating can produce puppies so don't be to worried there if you got a tie in the mating, although slip matings can produce puppies too.  Good luck.

Thanks for your replies. she also was still spotting blood 1 week after mating is this normal.
She is sleeping and has become very loving wanting cuddles and ber belly rubbed all the time.
her vulva is still a little swollen but no discharge.Her teats also feel warm she is picky with her food and drinks alot when she is not wanting to be loved or sleeping.
is this all normal behaviour.

All the signs seem to be pretty normal for a pregnant bitch

thanks very mcuh for your reply, I have had to split her meals so they are smaller as she wont eat her normal amount like she usually does.
Thanks again for you help, Is there any other signs i should look out for Like panting, Hair loss around her teats things like that.

my problems i have at the moment Is that she wont eat her food, yet she will eat chicken, She is also cleaning her vulva alot she  does not have any discharge, She also pooped in my house which she has never done before.
Hear teats near her back legs are getting really droopy, She is sleeping loads and has become very protective of me she keeps attacking my other dog when he comes near me is this all normal for a pregnant bitch.
I would be so greatful for any advice or information.

30 days post mating is the best time to do an ultrasound scan for pregnancy.  :)
(or a few days after that)

My bitch was done at 35 days.  Good luck.

hi, sorry for not replying sooner. Only just seen your Q.
It is not uncommon for some bitches to become fussy with their food mid pregnancy. You say she is sleeping a lot, Is she lethagic? If she is I'd get the vet to give her a check over, but if she's not lethargic - just a bit more tired, then sounds normal.
She needs to eat, you may need to spoil her a bit, to encourage her to eat whatever she will. But you should find that her appetite will pick up again soon.
continue monitoring her vulva for any discharge & ensure she has plenty of excercise to keep her fit ready for the birth.
Oh yeah & pooping in the house? Unfortunately pregnant & nursing bitches will often have a few behavioural mishaps (feel sorry for me type of thing usually - a breakdown in house training is one of them)
Or it can be pressure on the internal organs, but that is usually in late pregnancy.

Hi guys thanks for the advice she has been off her food and had a piece of chicken this morning and would not eat nothing else after that she finally had her food at 9 this evening then she went for her walk got back had a cuddle and then went to her bed and went back to sleep its all she has done all day but she seems ok.
Her boobs seem to be really droopy near her back end and she keeps scratching at her belly but apart from that she doing great.

The best thing is to keep offering her food as and when she feels like it.  Fortunately I didn't have this problem till my bitch was about 7 weeks into her pregnancy.  I found that adding an egg to her food would encourage her to eat and she did enjoy some rice pudding.  Anything light really was helpful to her.

Hi i have split her meals so she is getting smaller amounts and she seems to eat some of it then goes back to her bed. She is doing better but still wanting to be next to me all the time this i dont mind anyway even when i goto bed she needs to be near me.
