Sorry but just had to tell some one that I got annas score back today and I'm really plesed cos its 5 on the left and 6 on the right (breed average 19), could have been better but then it could have been a lot worse.I only had to wait 1 week and 3 days good eh! I have a good stud dog lined up and she will be mated next season hopefully nothing goes wrong in between. I'm soooo excited

Just to thank you all for your posts and to let you know that the dog is haemophilia clear and his hip score is 4:3 so all should go well, although it cant guarantee anything but at least im not damaging anna and I'm being responsible

Because it is carried on the X chromosome & the dog only will be a haemophillliac as the y chromosome is shorter than the X the chromosome & the gene for Haemophillia is carried on the part of the X chromosome that isn't matched by the Y chromosome basically

Bitches cannot have haemophillia it is carried on the part of the X chromosome only exposed in Males as the Y chromosome is shorter than the X chromosome a bit like this

There is a program that will predict haemophillia if the mother is a carrier on the tenset site(actually its a very good prediction program for coat colour & lots of other things & it's free

hi guys ..gsd have von willebrands as a bleeding disorder which is autosomal recesscive...not sex linked....you should also do the elbows as shepherds have a terrible rate of elbow dysplasia the german are actually doing the elbows on all gsd's now

They also have haemophillia which is genetic & sex linked & nothing to do with VW

hi moonmaiden..i have not ever heard of anyone testing for that where as most breeders test for von williebrands which is not uncommon in german imports....please dierct me to the site for haemophlia

hi jeangenie!!!......thanks..i can't say i've ever seen one with that but i seen bunches with von willebrands. it is a common disorder ...i can't see just dimissing von willebrands as nothing it is reccomended all dogs be tested before breeding...and its common due to the recessive nature.of course all mine are mported from germany they have different problems there...but i think its worse not to do the elbows i suppose..

All GOOD GSD breeders of whatever type(correct/non correct etc)test their males for Haemophillia I'm surprised all the GSD breeders you know only test for VW try this link

Edited to add how could you have seen a dog with haemophillia ? There are no outwards signs until the dog has a bleed

I've had several imports & puppies from imports never had one with VW but three GSD's & two dobermanns at our club have died with it The GSDs were non KC registered one black & pale gold  & two biscuit None of them looked correct to the breed standard & this is over the last 40 years of running a GSD & an all breed club

At this time we have the first Tibetan Mastiff in this country with VW we do not know how it has got into the breed, but even if it is  only one I think breeders should have there dogs tested before they at bred from, we are a very small breed and if this is nipped in the bud I hope we will never have another

As for hemophelia...  I am not sure if it is the same in dogs, but I know how it works in humans...  The father of my twins was a hemopheliac.  While my twins cannot have this disorder since they are girls, they do CARRY the gene, so if they marry men who have the gene (recessive I believe), active or not, any male children they have may have the disorder.

They wouldn't have to marry partners that were haemophilliacs to have sone that have it as they have a 50/50 chance of passing on the condition to their sons

It is carried on the X chromosome which males only get from their mothers It tkaes two X chromosomes to make a female(one from each parent)& an X & a Y chromosome to make a male(except in birds I beleive-well chickens I knwo have the chromosomes the other way round)the Y can only come from the father so a Haemophilliac father cannot pass on the defective gene to his sons

hi moonmaiden...i don't claim to know more than the SV in germany so if you say they test all males i believe you.after all they are the epitome of good breeding....all good breeders also do the elbows !!!!.do you have a site where i can view your dogs???.i'm interested in which lines you use .i am familiar with most import lines..

As you are knowledgeable about German lines you will know the Salzbergen & Krappfeld lines. Sadly my own  GSD lines no longer live in my dog as I only have one who is a rescue now. Due to ill health I couldn't manage to train show another shepherd although I have had my German friends offer to send me one. Herr Kirsch(Krappfeld)died a few years ago &  Gunter Pfeffer is very ill st this tims. My dogs stayed well clear of the popular lines that were so popular in the 80's 90's as I prefer to choose for myself rather than go with fashion

I don't yet have my GSD's on line as I have to get their photographs scanned & my health isn't up to going into the loft & digging out the album nor dismantling their photographs that are up on the walls

Sorry to hear Gunter Pfeffer is ill, I remember stewarding for him many years ago, a very knowledgeable dog man and breeder. I would be interested in Moonmaidens dogs/lines too :-)

What a pity you haven't had time to reply Gunter has just rung to thank me for a book I sent for Hildegrund about Princess Diana I could have mentioned you & passed on your good wishes for his health. He sounded a bit better & doesn't have to go back for tests for a while yet & has plans for the future & a nice young dog he has bred(he's still trying to pursuade me to have another GSD)

Hello Moonmaiden, had typed a reply then the phone went!!
I stewarded and scribed for Gunther at the BAGSD Champ show at Newbury about 8-10 years ago, he had a very good entry of females.
With regards to blood testing in Germany, they all have to DNA test but I believe that not many haemophilia test, I have spoken to many German breeders and unfortunately their attitude has been 'we dont have haemophilia in Germany'.  Lucky them!!

By the way I did not say the SV test for haemophillia but as far as I am aware they do & also do DNA tests

Hi maxisleepi dont know how the score came back so quickly coz my vet and also some people on here told me that there had just been a meeting about a week before I got her hips x rayed and so I was expecting them being about another 3-4 weeks or so but I dont mind, in fact I'm really pleased coz I couldn't wait to find out. It was killing me not knowing whether or not they were o.k or not
