I have a 9 week old german shepherd pup who can do 5 or 6 "number 2's" in a day.  He obviously isn't fully wormed and does drink a lot of milk and water along with his normal food.  He's going to the vet on Saturday for his first vaccination and is due to be wormed and I will mention this to him but in the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations or is it just the worms playing havic with him.  I don't give him anything sweet.  He's obviously not retaining any weight as it goes right through him.  He's only been eating meat for about a week so it might be that and his system getting used to it.  He eats biscuits recommended for pups but he's not too interested in these at the moment and goes straight for the meat but does nibble on them during the day.  As he won't just eat the biscuits, the breeder recommended mixing them with the meat which he seems to like. I may be doing something wrong eg shouldn't be drinking milk or something else.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks.  michelle.powell@addleshaw.goddard.com

Most dogs lack the enzyme lactase which is required to process lactose (milk sugar) also some dogs have a milk allergy and are allergic to the casein (protein) in milk.  The symptoms of both can be gas, bloating and diarrhoea.  IMPO you should take the dog off milk, no animal requires milk post weaning.

You don't say what food you are giving him but again there are many ingredients that could upset a dog; have you thought about changing to Naturediet (a complete wet food made only from meat, rice and veggies) or alternatively Burns ( a complete dry food containing the same) many people who have had dogs with digestive problems have benefited from using these products.

I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that it is the milk.

You may also simply be giving him too much food for his system to cope with. Definately knock off the milk though.

I think you need to look at exactley what you are feeding - if the 'biscuits' are in themselves a complete diet, then adding the meat is doubling up on the protein side, which is unecessary.  If they are served as a mixer you may find the wheat is the biscuit is agrevating his gut.  And as the others have said dogs do not need milk post weaning, especially if they are being fed a complete diet.
