Topic Dog Boards / Showing / What age do you lead train?

I had Jeremy on a lead for the first time today, and he was great!  Was wondering what age every one else usually starts the show prospect pups off with lead training?  I usually dont start until 11 or 12 weeks, and Jeremy is only 9, but he seemed sort of ready - hard to explain, but he has been so good at his stacking training, never wiggles, feet go in right place, tail and head dont need propping up.  Then, as I am walking up and down he is always just at my feet, looking up and trotting along! :)  So we gave it a little go on one of the tiny toy leads and he just loved the whole business!  Of course, things cant stay this good, he is bound to just refuse to move the next time.  So, what age do you all do it, is it a breed/size related thing?
bye

I start training with the Pom's nearly as soon as they start walking.   By this I mean about 2 seconds of saying stand and holding them up etc.  With the lead usually from about 7 weeks, where I just put a lead on them and they can walk around with it on the floor.  I never start straight away with walking them around with me on the other end of the lead.

Anyway Gwen, with your experience I'm sure that you'd be able to advise me much more :d

give them there first lead when they get to about 6-7 weeks (8-9 weeks if buying in).  Saying that it NEVER goes tight on a tiny puppy and they go where they want to but it gets them used to it.  Also litters have 2 collers (one girly and one more masculin!!!) and they wear it losely for about 5 mins each a day once they are about 5 weeks old. also supervised at this time.

I start to collar train them for a few minutes at a time when they are about 4 weeks. Once they are used to this I attach a lead (usually when I have them on their own in the living room) and let them play with it. I tend to stop them from moving every now and then before 'walking' them back to the puppy room ' on a lead'. Some take to it very quickly but others hate it.
