When I took my female to the stud they were both very willing, but just when we thought they were tied, she let go I guess. Anyways, the poor stud was left with his thing hangin out there for a while and my question is, is this normal? This didn't happen last time, but it was her first mating then. Any help appriciated, missy

yes it happens--my very first litter was from slip matings.

yes, I know this, I am more concerned that the stud is ok when he's left that way.:) missy

well its not nice for them [one of the drawbacks of stud work] :D but it happens, theyre normally only uncomfortable for a while-some stud dog owners apply soapy water-vaseline etc and get them to stand up, -it normally helps things back where they belong,

I have only seen this the once, It actually has a clinical name for it.
If the willy does not retract after an hour a vet should be called as if left exposed can be prone to infection.
This can happen if the willy is damaged during the mating, or some dogs have this dry willy that needs help with lubrication to get back in. If the dog does suffer from this it really should not be used at stud too much. As its not a nice thing to happen time and time again. Also I expect he has no infection before hand? If he does then it was not wise for him to be held at stud as he could pass infection on to the bitch and then you are going to be in trouble. If he is used regular then he should have smears anyway to check for bacterial disorders etc.
The one dog I saw his willy was out for nearly two hours, it was gigantic. :D should not laugh as the dog then layed down in some straw the owners did nothing. I would of been frantic, all that straw stuck to his dingle.

One other point!
If it was a slip tie, then this can happen. The willy enlarges and he thinks he has done his job. I dont know how to say all this with out being too graphic. Anyway, if that happened it would take a while say 25 mins for the willy to go back. But that does not mean your bitch is in pup. This happens more so if the dog is eager with a maiden bitch and also the stud handler is very very important as its their job to watch whats going on and take the dog off the minute you suspect a slip tie is going to happen. I have done this tons of times, remove the dog a second and then back on again. Before he actually thinks he is in properly. If you dont then it would all come out. oooh yuk!!! What a subject.

Lots of people I know with stud dogs keep a bowl of cool water handy just in case this happens. The change in temperature and moisture is usually enough to help it back to normal.

I just read quickly in my gundog book that sugar is supposed to help as it draws fluid away from the dingle and then may allow retraction. ohhhh yuk! I will think of that now I am sitting here drinking my cup of tea. Oh yes in the book its called "paraphimosis".

Thank you all for the information. I'm going to call the stud owner and let her know. Thanks again. :) missy

use ky gel before the dog gos to the bitch, just a blob on your finger then you just entre it in the rigth place on him,and the same with the bitch,my stud use to hang out if the bitch didnot hold him in for the tie,i give it 10 mins then a clean tin with cold water dip in the water i find that works too.
