- By eddie [gb] Date 02.02.04 10:33 UTC
I have just heard on the radio that a professional groomer has dyed her poddle green!!  She said there was nothing wrong with it as it was vegtable colouring and the dog was not harmed.  How ever has she not thought about all them idiots out there who will probley use human hair dye on their dogs and just think of what could happend to their skin etc and the potential problems.  I am going to try and find out more about ehr and phone her today and express my distgust.  I think the radio said it was in todays sun

Dogs are often dyed with vegetable dye in grooming competitions and they have been for years, as well as for major events (weddings etc).  Maybe this is just the first time that it has been publicised?

This has been going on for yonks! :D  In competitions and in private for weddings etc, dogs have been dyed blue, red, yellow, orange, green etc; it is harmless vegetable dye.  chill out!  :D

Ok it may have been done for years, but I personaly havent heard of it before.  I just see the potential dangers of people going ahead and dying there dogs with human hair dye surely this would cause burns.  IMPO  What is the point in dying a dogs hair.  You should love a dog for how it is not modify it! IMPO ;-)

Plus the headline before the story was The new craze sweeping the dog world.  Dying your dogs hair any colour!

I am actually on a pro-groomers mail list with the person concerned.  She is a competition groomer, and from waht has been said on theother list, I think most of the groomer who heard the interview were impressed with the professional and helpful view she gave of groomers.  You have to understand that as a commecial groomer we see dogs in the most apparlling state, time and again, from people who think that once a year attention is enough.  To this end, a little publicity stunt, like a pink or green poodle, which gets some media attention for the industry will hopefully get a few more matted dogs into the parlours to be sorted out.

And I hate to crush you illusions, but loads of dogs are dyed using hair dye!  It is, of course, very much against dog showing ules, but it happens.  And in a lot of other countries it is the accepted norm. (as is bleaching for white dogs)  As long as instructions are followed it does little harm.  A product which is safe for a human will be safe for a dog.  There is very little pH difference between human and canine skin, that being the handle on which dog shampoo manufacturers hag their products benefits - it is a fallacy.  So products safe for people (and horses too) are almost always OK for dogs.  And to be honest, it is likely to be a very messy business, I cant see many people actually trying it at home.  If you like  I can pass you e-mail details on to the person concerend, and you could tell her you concerns and she could explain her reasons  and tell you something about herself and her dogs.

I've seen the picture it's very bright! Of course wouldn't have worked on any colour other than a white!! Wasn't one of the Crufts winners accused of being dyed?

Does the vegetable dye come out with water? Can just imagine someone taking their dog out and it going streaky in the rain.

The article I read says it lasts 6 weeks so I suppose it must come out. Imagine having a damp one lie on the carpet for a bit!

We once accidentally dyed a horse lilac - he looked like the biggest "My Little Pony" you ever saw.  Took about 3 weeks to wear off completely, and didnt seem to run in the rain, although Martins breeches took on a slightly grey hue after riding him in the wet!

every crufts winner is accused of something!!! lol

many dogs are dyed (show ring included) but people don't go to the press about it and they don't go shouting about it!

Have to say I am a groomers nightmare.  Went to a top grooming show a few years ago as they asked me to take my breed of dog as it was rare.  They didn't speak to me after I "groomed" my dog as it should be!!  A Spanish Water Dog has to be clipped off all over the same length, no brushes, no combs, they mat before they cord etc.  They unfortunately should of done some homework before inviting me.

If I ever see anything like this done to a Spanish Water Dog I would go mad, unfortunately in Belgium they are already sculpturing them and a groomer won the competition for grooming a Spanish Water Dog, a shame the organisers didn't realise that it was groomed incorrectly.

Usually in grooming competitions you have to groom to the breed standard.  However, there are often 'creative groooming' classes where you 'sculpt' to your own taste.  This is often done with cross breeds, who have no expected pattern of grooming, but perhaps your breed had been entered in one of these?

I once worked for a company called dogsbody and cat tails, they had grooming and petshop francises, they had a poodle which they always dyed when it came to opening a new franchise.  Looked damn stupid I thought but it got publicity !!
