Loads of people have been telling me about Dr Johns complete food and how good it is, but some say gold and others silver.

Does anyone on here use it and which one do they find best?

Hi,

They're both ok, as a maintenance food, but neither are high in protein.
I used Dr John Gold for my Shepherds, and although they all maintained their condition, their stools were quite often runny.
I now only use it for my 3 collies and one shepherd, all of whom do well on it. My other Shepherds have Arden Grange, and also do well.

It's really up to you what you feed.....I've heard of a lot of dogs that do well on Dr John (gold and silver) but then I've heard of a lot that don't.

It seems to me, that its a cheap and cheerful food, that can maintain a good condition....but not for all dogs.

To be honest, there are lots of better complete foods on the market,

My dogs, staffies and dogue de bordeaux, have all done fantastically well on Dr Johns. Their coats are gleaming.
We have a staffie bitch that has a litter of 5 now 3 weeks old. We continued with the Dr Johns through pregnancy and nursing and she is in FANTASTIC shape! We have, whilst feeding the pups, given her whelpi and scrambled eggs with cheese too but the main food has been Dr Johns!. Normally a bitch will drop weight when nursing a litter but she has not - if it was not for her boobs she would be fit enough for the show ring!
I only have good things to say about the stuff!!! :D

It is an adult maintenance diet and not developed to feed growing puppies.

We feed Dr Johns to our older Bordeaux but would never never feed it to our puppy's and younger dogs it is a older dogs maintainance feed althought Britney was fed on it untill 3 weeks before she had her pups, and she looks great and no loss of condition, you would not know she had, had pups now,

There is a lot of cereal's in the food, that would problerbly give him the runs, go for a good quality food or a tripe and wholemeal biscuit, that can put weight on a puppy that is not gaining. have you had the puppy checked out for mal absorbtion  and digestive problems if she is not gaining weight, how much do's she weigh now, she must be coming on a bit now as when I last got you email my Bordeaux litter was babies.

Is your mums dog thriving as you said she was from the same breeder as yours, cannot remember if you said that same litter and he was very big, have you contacted the breeder and asked her advice, if she has had Bordeaux for some time she would be able to help you through your problems, which you seem to have with your puppy, when my youngest went off his food we took to cracking a raw free range egg over his dinning and he loved that.

If I was you I would ask your vet to test him.As at the puppy stage it is the time when he needs the best nutrition possible
