Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pup Becoming Sexually Active

My pup is 15 weeks and his mum is due in season any time now.  When does a pup become sexually active?  He has sniffed her a couple of times, but has shown no interest yet, so not sure if he is too young or if it could still be a problem.  Will obviously be keeping an eye on them at all times and he is caged when we are not there, but even though I think he is too young, I don't want to be proved wrong and have an accident.

snap! that's why I was so keen to have our bitch spayed mid-January rather than mid-February as the vet suggested. I'm so glad I stuck to my guns - it's now done, she's fine and all is well. The puppy has just started humping his toy dog!!! I know that's not necessarily sexual, but nevertheless I have peace of mind. Another two weeks and we could have been in difficulty - particularly when you then add on the 4 weeks of the season, by which time pup would have been 21 weeks! I have no-one who could have had one or other dog, neither would I have been happy to have put one in kennels - but it would have been impossible to have separated them all the time.

Sorry, briela, I've rambled on too much about my own situation, which doesn't help you, does it? If neither of the two dogs is to be neutered, have you considered how you are going to manage not just this but future seasons? I gather from others on this board that it's virtually impossible to keep a dog and a bitch in the house together for the duration. My bitch got pregnant because her then owner thought she was OK for the first few days of her season, and sent the dog on his holidays too late!

15 weeks isn't that a bit early??, I know you shouldn't breed with a male until they are two other wise it can permanently do damage to the male....or is this an old wifes tale

Old wives' tale, Flutterby. Depending on the breed and the various health checks that are required, any time from about 11 months is perfectly alright.

I don't want to breed my dog, especially not to his mother.  I just wanted to find out if he would be ready to do anything at this age and if so, then I would keep them separated.  We had planned on breeding the mother next year (not with her son!?) but have now decided to have her dressed, but because it is too close to her season, we are waiting until a couple of months after this, as previously suggested on this Board.  So the question is still - does anyone know when a male pup can become sexually active?

The male pup at home was 'humping' things from the age of 5 wks.  At 12 weeks now he and his sister often seem to engage in '69'....embarrasing when guests are present!

But - I'm interested in this too, what is the earliest age a dog has been known to sire puppies?

From what I can find on the net, it varies according to breed, with the smaller breeds maturing faster than the larger ones. But on average it seems that male dogs become fertile at about 6 months of age, reaching sexual maturity at about 15 months.

Hope this helps.

I friend of mine has a Jack Russel bitvh and bought a male pup a couple of years ago, they traveled to work with her in the car and when the pup was 14 weeks old the bitch came in season, she came back to her car and found them tied on the back seat, result was two unplanned pups.
