Could someone just give me a little advice. I have been reading on another forum about breeding. One women asked how oftern she should breed her bitch and she got two responses, 1) as long as the dogs are healthy and tested you could breed every season 2) you should only breed every other season. Could anyone enlighten me just for my own knowledge

Because you CAN doesn't mean that you SHOULD!!
You should allow at least one season between matings - personally I prefer 2 (unless of course you have a bitch that only comes in once a year)
I believe I'm correct in saying that the KC will not register two litters in under a year.
It gives the bitch a chance to recover physically and mentally - after all - what woman would like to be pregnant all the time??

i think the general consensus (sp) is that, for the dogs health mainly at least a season's gap should be left.

I don't know about now but 10yrs ago I knew someone who bred her bitch 2 seasons in a row.
The bitch had gone 10 months between seasons and was already 5yrs old.
She had bred the bitch for the first time a just over 4 yrs old.
I couldn't see a problem with this at the time as the bitch had a very small litter the first time and had recovered very well.
The owner did check with her breeder and vet that the bitch was not going to be adverseley (sp) affected.
I guess it all depend on the breed of dog but usually if I breed from a bitch I leave it for two or three seasons before I would allow her to be mated again. Some people are in it for the breed and others for the greed!

There are circumstances when you could do back to back breeding like the poster who said her friends dog was getting on when it had its first litter. Carina's first litter was nearly 2 years ago and I'm going to breed again from her this year and Lana had her first litter 11 months ago at the age of 2 and I'm hoping to have another litter off her again.
I have only done a back to back mating once and that was because my girl was getting on, she was a very rare breed and somebody imported a new male which we thought would go well with her. I had to get permission from my vet and also the Kennel Club. It's not something that I would do though as such, I did it this one time as I felt that the dog who was imported would be good for the breed and luckily he has been!!
If I hadn't of done this mating, I wdn't. have my Ickle Man who is the grandson of my girl!!

Well I think you should give your dog one or two seasons of rest, we bred our Baby on her fourth seasons, and she has gone two seasons so now she has just started this heat we will be breeding...But this I think we will make it her last she has only had one litter.. I think people who breed for the Greed should have their dogs taken of them...there wqas this one breeder who's dogs where always in Pup its not good for them...

I am the one who's friend bred 'back to back'.
The first litter was because the bitch was on 'breeding terms'.
She only got the second litter after advice from the vet, the bitch only had 3 pups the first time( husky).
She only bred a second time because she wanted a baby from her girl but didn't want to breed when the bitch was much older.
The bitch only had 4 pups the second time .
The bitch always went 10-15 mths between seasons throughout her life as did her daughter who never had a litter.

I too would consider breeding "back to back" if my bitch went 10-15months between seasons - it does mean that there is more than 1 year between litters.;)
Margot (who has a bitch who goes 7 months between :D )
I have bred back to back once but the bitch did go 11 months between seasons and is a working bitch so toned back up very quickly after the pups were weaned , as with most breed clubs our code of conduct would be breached if I allowed my bitch to whelp more than once in a twelve month period
