my partner is diabetic hes insulin dependent.

to go abroad he needed a medical note   ..hid driving licence has 2  be renewed every three years.

he can lead a normal life ...but with insulin you can still eat everday food  just give yourself a bigger shot of insulin.
they have hypos if sugar is to low or to high.  if to low he can become unconsious if that happens dextorate tablets do not work but are usefull for sugar if neded i use jam as it works quicker . if to high and hes unconsious i may  have to give insulin
what exactly do u want to know

Hi Tracey
thanks for the reply
My husband has been diagnosed as diabetic type 1 today. He is going for further tests tomorrow.
Our heads are full of questions some of which you have already answered..thankyou.
Other Questions include...
Is the driving licence renewed on a medical basis?.
Can /how much can your husband drink(alcohol)??
Will my husband have to pay for his medication?
Its been a huge shock..he only went to see the doc with a minor unrelated illness...
Your help is a great help
Thanks,Nikki.

I've been insulin dependant diabetic since the age of 9, I'm now 41 and have had 4 children no problems.  If there is anything you would like to know please feel free to contact me.

As for drinking, I'm don't so I can't help you there, but I was told you have to be very careful as blood sugar and alcohol give similar warning signs as low/high blood sugar.

No, you will get a medical exemption certificate which will pay for any medication, not just related to the diabetes.

Your husband will also need regular eye checks, diabetes can affect eye sight if diabetes isn't under control, special care with feet.........

Once on insulin if your hubby plays sport he will need to take extra carbohydrate as he will be burning up his blood sugar and may go low, which then causes a hypo

It all sounds scarey, but I promise you it's not, I was only 9 when I had to first inject myself but you soon learn to manage it and once controlled you can get on with a normal life style................

Try not to worry, you will get all the help and support from your doctor/hospital

contact your insurance company and advise them to.  but do not let them put your insurance up
your husband will not have to pay for any medication at all

you partner can drink alchol in moderation - my partner was told to drink pilsner..  dont drink alcho pops  full of sugar
you need yearly checks for eyes and feet because of loss of sensation or blind ness  but dont let this worry you.

your diabetic nurse should explain everything.

take care and keep us informed

Hi Tracey

I use a product called Hypostop, it's a fast acting dextrose gel, it's in a 80g bottle, so small enough to fit in my handbag, works within minutes, I also have a GlucaGen Hypokit injection, which my husband should administer if I am Unconscious, thankfully that doesn't happen often, I think the last time was 5 years ago

On prescription, the Hypostop gel works really fast

I've never heard of them either!

My Hubby's had to be taken in by ambulance twice in the last two years - I think I'm going to ask him to get some :) Trouble is, he only goes hypo at night, so it's Muggins here that has to deal with it - just as well I sleep lightly :(

My Hubby injects four times a day. It sounds awful, but he finds it easier to control his sugar levels doing this as his activity levels differ. He used to just inject twice a day and that caused more hassles. Hope everything goes okay :)

Will have to ask the gp for it

yeah im  a light sleeper to and have to be aware of his breathing change due to sugar.

sounds daft but my partner knows when his sugar is too high cos his ears burn....  any 1 else get that

have to agree the four injections a day is easier round his life style cos before you had to eat at the same time each day but with the four you can eat different times   ...

keep us informed archer

I get warnings in the daytime for low sugar, my family also pick up on the fact I start yawning alot..........lol.  Night time is more of a problem, hubby works night shifts so he worry's constantly!!  Last major hypo I had, I went to bed at 1am and woke at 5am with 2 ambulance persons sat on my bed and a drip in my right hand and a very worried looking hubby who had tried for an hour and a half to bring me round.

As for my sugar being high, I just feel generally unwell but I check my blood sugars two or three days per week to keep on top of it, I only inject 2 daily, except when I was pregnant, then it was 5 times a day and was having around 98 units of insulin each injection - the joys of diabetes and pregnancy!!......lol. which is crazy, I normally only have 20 each injection!
