i would like some information on breeders lisences, hope someone can help. where do you get a license from and how much does it cost? also, if the puppies you sell are purebred but not KC reg, do you still have to get a lisence? what if the puppies are crossbred? as you can tell, i dont know much about it, but would like to know more, for example, what happens if you dont get a lisence? there are lots of people breeding dogs and a lot of them dont seem to have licenses, is this illegal? what if you breed dogs in your own home, as opposed to kennels, do you have to have a lisence? once you have a license, how many breeds of dog are you allowed to breed? are you allowed to sell puppies which other people have bred (for example a family member, or fellow breeder) if someone coule explain that would be great thanks

In order to win Crufts the dog must be of a defined breed recognised by the KC. Therefore a crossbreed or mongrel will NEVER win Crufts. However, they are more than welcome to compete in the agility, obedience and flyball parts of the competition if they so wish.
There is nothing wrong with mongrels or crossbreeds but we have to question why anyone, who clearly knows little of dogs, wishes to apply for a breeders licence if they are genuinely interested in producing healthy happy canine companions rather than just wanting to make money, which you wont if you breed dogs properly.

sorry poodlebabe i was just winding my old mate Jackie up

There are a lot of questions there Guest! A breeder requires a licence (from the Council) if they breed 5 or more (I believe) litters a year. It doesn't matter how many breeds (or their crosses) are involved, or whether the pups are KC registered or not. The majority of breeders don't produce more than one or two litters every couple of years, so they don't need a licence.
Hope this helps. If you need to ask more, then
Register and ask away!

Just to add to the very accurate info. given by Jeangenie, you need a licence regardless if you are breeding from home or kennels if you are breeding 5 or more litters per year. And if you buy in then sell on Pups you also need a Pet Shop licence. To obtain a Breeders licence you have to fulfill various criteria. Unfortunatley, this is not to do with knowledge of dogs, but the physical requirments can be very stringent, including adequate houseing, seperate food preperation areas for dogs, waste disposal arrangmeents, etc. The actual requirements are up to the individual local authorities. Some are also concerned with adequate car parking etc, which rules out a lot of private houses meeting requirements. You should get yearly inspections by the Dept of Enviromental Health, and a Vet appointed by the council. Of course, if you are planning to apply for a breeders licence from a private house you will most probably also need planning permission for change of use. This can also have implications on your rates, as uniform buisiness rate can be applied to the part of your home which they say is designated business useage.

I must say the post by this guest worries me and I for one will not be offering any advice to them unless a number of doubts I have are allayed. Puppy farming is not something I would lend a hand with and reading the post that is exactly what it sounds like to me!

John. This post sounds like a wind up to me. Best thing to do is ignore it and hope it goes away...lol

Unfortunately I don't think it is a wind up, although it has had that effect on me.

Unfortunately I don't think it's a WUM either Molly1. It may be but to me anyway it does not read that way.
Consider the original post. The guest wanted info on a breeders license. How much it costs and where to get it. Whether it was needed to breed unregistered pedigree dogs or crossbreeds. The poster also wanted to know how many puppies a license would allow them to breed. Also it appears to me that they were interested in finding ways of bypassing the license altogether.
One thing this does not sound like is responsible breeding. If the person feels like registering on here to explain the reason for asking these questions I MAY modify my ideas about them but in the mean time. . . . . . . . .

Which is why I hoped that giving details of some of the implications might put a stop to further plans!

I agree entirely, John. This sounds very much like a person out to see if it's worthwhile trying to make a few bob out of selling puppies. I hope that by telling them the laws they might reconsider ...

I for one would not try and help anyone with intentions to breed like this .
I apologise if I am wrong but it seems to me you have intentions to breed as many puppies as you can. If so you wont get any help on this board.
It is a vile trade and I hope it will soon be illegal to do this .
