Hi I really hope someone can help.I wont up to Obby whining in her box she had 8 pups 24 hours ago and has ben fine since no propblem with the delivery and now she wont get up to go out for a pee, sould I take to the emergency or what?
- By carolyn Date 01.02.04 09:34 UTC
Do you mean she CANT stand up and go out or wont go out?
If its CANT then yes she needs thevets NOW
if she can but WONT then dont worry too much, you could slip a lead on her and take her out for
a wee but she will want to come straight back in.

As Carolyn says, if she can't get up, then call the vet out asap.

If she won't then put her lead on and make her. As soon as she's made herself comfortable let her off to run back to her family. She must go out at least four times every 24 hours, and if she's a good mum then she won't want to leave her babies. This is why you must be firm - for her health. After a few days she will be more willing to leave them for 10 minutes or so at a time and she can be taken for short walks.

My concern would be for a retained puppy. If your vet has not checked her and/or she did not have an injection and/or you are concerned at all, I would speak to them asap. Better to be safe than sorry.

Some bitches don't like to leave their pups and you literally would have to take them out yourself.  If you're worried it's better to be safe than sorry and contact your vet.

Hope all's OK.

Well really you should take her and the pups to the vets, for a check up, my Staffordshirebull Terrier when she had her pups she started at 12.00am and had all of her pupppys by 7.30am I rang the Vets that morning and they checked her and then the Puppys they say thats the best thing to do, you must take your dog after the birth to make sure she is fine...

Daina,

How is your girl and the pups??
Has she been to the vets?
I must admit when I bred my bitches I always had them an oxtocyn(sp) injection just in case.
My friend thought I was spending money unnesseccarily until she lost her bitch to Mastitis. The pups were 5 weeks old.
As Admin said. Better safe than sorry.
Good luck.

Hi thankyou all for your help,I called the vet right after I added the last post and they said to bring her right in but first I called my mom over to check for any more pups,I couldnt feel anything but wasnt sure so she came over and said that she realy didnt think thier were any left, but she was obviously having major problems, she could not get up at all we picked her up and tried to get her to walk arround thinking that maby her muscles were siezed up or something and she just fell over ( we caught her) also stoped drinking anything for a whyle and we waited an hour before we took her and finally she wanted to dring puppy formula with a bit of sugar and got up (not well) half hour later, she ended up drinking 5 bowls of formula and we started adding an egg after the 3rd bowl,we had been offering her food and drinks and whatever we thaught she might like and nothing untill then after turning down everything elts, and is still being really picky.Oh and about taking her in to get the shot of Oxy I had called them right after she delivred and they said if shes not having any problems that dont bring her in I really wanted to,Whats that about???I will never not take any of my dogs in from now on regardless og what they say and if they so not to again I will call another vet cause I was so scared she had another. It turns out she didnt have anymore(moms are aloways right :)) she went to the emergency hospital they did every test under the sun I think. And still dont know for sure what it was I say was cause she got home was almoast back to normal within 2 hours, still not eating well and she has explosive diareha like I have never seen before, but besides that shes totally fine.(knock on wood and thank god)so they think it was a calcium defencey but her test came back totally normal so we still dont know what might have happened they asked if she might be just really tired  if she had a long hard delivery but no it was 4 hours from start to finish and they popped right out with one push, and she was great for 24 hours and  then problems. If anyone has some info that might help Iam all eyes.
Thankyou so much for your quick reply :))

Daina,

Thank god she's okay now.
It's years since I've bred any litters, I spey my girls now.
I once had a vet tell me not to give one of my rough collies the injection and she got mild mastitis so after that I had the jab no matter what.
I suppose your girl could have been exhausted but I think it's more likely she has had an infection or something.
Just keep a very close eye on her.
Are the pups doing fine, has she enough milk??
You know what you're doing so I can't see any more problems.

I'll tell you about my Husky bitch now everthing is okay at your end.

It was her third litter, the first two litters she had gone over by between 5-10 days.
Each time the vet said I didn't know when she had been mated. What a crock.
The first time she went 10 days over, she was only mated once.
She had 5 beautiful big pups. It took her 10 hours. All fit & healthy.
Second litter, again only mated once, she was 5 or 6 days late.
I took her to the vet in the car and the stupid sod insisted she wasn't pregnant.
It took 25 minutes to get home in the car. Tam 'jumped' out of the car, ran through to her Kennel and promptly produced 6 huge pups in less than 2 hours. I took them for a check at the vet after a few hours.
The vet never lived it down.
The third litter was totally different.
I bred her to a different stud. She started her labour on the day she was due.
She went into the conservatory, I always let her have the pups where she felt comfy.
She delivered 4 small pups and stopped her labour. I could still feel pups moving but as you know bitches often have a long rest.
Huskies are prone to having a long rest after they have emptied one uterine horn.
It was at night so we let her rest and just kept an eye on her. After about 3 hours I rang the vet who said bring her in. I didn't have transport at the time. The vet was less than a mile up the street and he lived on site. He refused to come to the house. I couldn't get a taxi firm to take her as she was a big dog.
In the end I rang a friend who bred Collies.
She talked me through 'feathering' and eventually I delivered a tiny 6oz pup, it had been across the cervix.
The pup wasn't breathing so I 'swung' it gently to clear it's airway. Then I palpated it's chest. After 15 minutes ( the bitch had started delivering again) I was going to give up. As a last try I gave the pup the kiss of life and it started breathing.
In the end I had 7 below average sized pups and the tiny one. Average size is about 12-16 ozs, the little one was 6ozs. The rest were about 11-12 ozs.
When I took them to the vet the next day he couln't believe the little one was alive.
We had to syringe feed her for 3 weeks but she lived. I re-homed her at 2 yrs old after she had all the tests to make sure she was healthy.
She's 7yrs old now and is still only 14inches at the withers and weighs about 19lbs.
I gave up breeding after that and now all my dogs are pets.
We called the pup Microchip. Her new owners changed it to Titch.
I must say I don't use that vet anymore. My vet now is fantastic.

Hi thanks for your reply:))
Shes doing ok now but not eating well yet shes still drinking and eating her Tums for the calcium Iam a little concerned cause she had ALOT of milk and it now she not nearly as full as she was so we will start suplementing today the pups all seem to be doing fine and are healthy,my friend told me to make eveporated milk 1 egg yolk and a bit of corn syrup what do you think about this?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.02.04 12:20 UTC
Hi Daina,
I would avoid supplementing their feeds if you possibly can, especially if the pups are fine and healthy. Are you weighing them? If they are all steadily gaining, then I personally would leave them to it. The more they suckle, the more milk the bitch will produce - if they are full up with supplementary feeds (which can easily cause tummy upsets) she will produce less, and you have a downward spiral. How old are the pups, and are you making sure that the bitch is having plenty of fluids?
- By Daina [ca] Date 03.02.04 22:30 UTC
Ya shes drinking plenty now just not eating much and the babies are  healthy theyve been gaining weight really well, but the vet told me I shouldnt let them on her so much cause of the calcium problem, sorry I forgot to mention that.
Thankz
