Can anyone tell me what they think about burgess SUPA DOG complete food, i feed my staff on the active for the extra protein it has in it now she's 19 mths, did have her on the normal complete one somtimes give her an extra treat by adding some chicken livers, but only no and again i normaly knock 50g of her portion when i do this, but anyone's views would be nice to know ??????......scoobs

First question is why does she need extra protein?  Can't help with the food have no experience in fact do not think I have heard of it.

Have just looked it up, it is wheat and maze based with what is called 'meat' also contains sugar so the food is not what I would wish to feed but dogs do like food with the molasses and if you are happy with your dogs condition then it is up to you. It may be the high protein is not being used by your dog anyway as most will be from the grain content that is not always used by the dogs body.

Hi Jackie

Thanks for your reply, i am a little suprised you hve not heard of it?? it is a mid range complete definately not one of the nasty cheap ones, the protein side of it referring to packaging, for active and working dogs to promote muscle growth and i exercise her well at the moment good 2 miles lead walking, 2-3 miles free running and a good ten minutes a day chasing the ring constanly i throw it she brings it back i throw it again solid for ten mins she's 19 mths and weighs 18.8 kgs she has been around this weight for at least 9 months i am trying to shape her i suppose and try and push the weight down a bit she does not look fat and definately not skinny or ripped you know what i mean if you know staffs, i'm looking for something in between lean but well muscled, she was on hills for the first year then gradualy changed to winalot wholegrain mixer & butchers tripe mix, decided i prefare the complete foods so thought i'd give this a go she is not so loose as she was on the tinned & biscuit, have thought about the stuff you can buy at pets at home they keep it in there freezers, natural blocks of different flavours just need to find space in the freezer first though.
If you can suggest some foods that i can have a look at this would be helpful, i'm not asking for you to lead me by the hand, just some different brands types etc, i dont want to put her back on the hills she's not keen on it besides i know it is one of the best??? but personaly only my own opinion it is overated a tad me thinks?????
Looking forward to your reply, got to scoot now walk time before it gets to dark!!!!!!

To be fair it may be that I had heard but I had discounted it as a food for my hounds because they do not do well on a wheat based food and the term 'meat' rings alarm bells. My dogs do not use the cereal well, it passes through without doing any good and I do not like feeding my dogs sugar.

Can't recommend what you should feed your dog, that is up to you, I feed mine Burns.
- By scooby [gb] Date 25.01.04 18:23 UTC
burns???? never hears of that one, mine seems to like this one i've done away with the butchers and just knock up a little gravy she loves it!!!!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 25.01.04 18:30 UTC
Difficult to imagine if you read this forum that you have not heard of Burns! Do a search.  As I said if you are happy with what you feed and it suits you dogs, then that is up to you.

I wouldn't say it's cheap and nasty but it is cheap. I used to pay £11.99 for a 15kg sack(burgess) and i now pay £32.99 for a 15kg sack of JWB.
My girl was on the same Burgess supa dog for working/active dogs and she thrived on it but with so much hype on what to feed i changed to JWB. To be honest i have been thinking of going back on it, because she doesn't seem to enjoy her food anymore like she did.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 25.01.04 19:02 UTC
As I said if you are happy why change providing your dog is doing well and is not passing loads of poo. My personal feeling are I would rather not feed that amount of wheat and maize, we all know that maize goes straight through. And the term 'meat' makes my stomach turn, added to that I do not like to feed my dogs sugar, although there is no doubt that dogs like it, but then so do children and we know what sugar does to them.

The Supa dog range also has a "sensitive" product in their range that contains no wheat or gluten (lamb and rice based). This is about £18 for a 15kg sack
I could be wrong but I think that their puppy variety is rice based.

i've heard of JWB (sorry i'm a thicko!!!) around the same price as hills eukanuba etc,
i must admit my dog seems to love the supa dog so i'll give it a go for a while well i will have to 15kg bag to get through ihad her on the red bag before just the standard one!!!!
yes at half the price is it half as good???????????????? only time will tell!!!!
as far as sugar goes my kids love it HYPO heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have heard many, many great reports about burns,it sounds like a super food, maybe you could try mixing a bit in with his usual food if it doesnt upset his tum.
- By miloos [gb] Date 26.01.04 20:08 UTC
hi, my 3 labs are all thriving on supadog, and we have had no probs whatsoever with it.It is a mid price range food, definitely not the cheapest and they love it!!!
- By co28uk [gb] Date 29.01.04 14:30 UTC
Can you get supadog online
- By miloos [gb] Date 29.01.04 15:07 UTC
Not sure on that one, we get it from pets at home, and most other good pet shops stock it!!!

I use burgess puppy and would highly recommend it .
I also use Burgess sensitive . I have tried out several other brands but this is my dogs fav dry food . Allergy wise and for tastiness .(ie they enjoy eating it - and one of mine is very  fussy)
A friend has toured the factory and assures me the ingredients used are all fresh and the hygiene levels are very high .
- By Alexanders [gb] Date 31.01.04 01:52 UTC
My sister feeds her dogs on Supadog and they are in excellent condition.  I think they do a fair amount of poos though!  Do those of you who use it and have used other brands think this is the case?

At the moment, I have put Saffy on Chappie complete because I have read that vets say it is a good food and also because of the price.  I must say she still only poos twice a day (unless she has a snack inbetween meals) and her condition seems very good.  In the past I have fed Nutro, Hills, Pedigree Advance and Pedigree, and Bento and I feel Chappie is as good as any of these (and much cheaper).

I have started Curtis on Supadog Fussy since last month.  It's cereal content is rice.    I can say hand on heart, I wish I'd tried it months ago.  His toilet is terrific, he eats it no problem and joy of joys, he is carrying some meat on his bones!    :D
- By Hippo [gb] Date 01.02.04 02:04 UTC
Yes I have found with the adults they do more poo with Burgess than eg Burns but they enjoy eating it and the poo is firm .
With the puppies the poo is consitently firm with Burgess - again more poo than burns , but less than with beta or bakers .
- By Hippo [gb] Date 01.02.04 02:05 UTC
ops - forgot to add .. Chappie is not a bad food - it has a low fat content too which can be handy with many conditions .

hello,
i have a jack-russel cross who stayed at my mums when i moved out. He has had supa dog 3 for years he is now 15years old. is as fit as a fiddle, has never had any health problems and looks like he has years in him yet. when taz (staff) was a pup and he went to my mums he would pop his head in the pantry and sneak out the meaty chunks from the supa dog. Bailey (staff) also does that now. and my mums new little staff Kenza pinches jakes supa dog chunks too - an all round winner it seems.
when taz was pup he had bakers complete puppy loved it. he was and is a very fussy eater and would just stop eating things after so long, have tried butchers tinned (liked for a while). Winalot tinned (not convinced). Asda hero tinned (not a fan) I think its called Hi-life moist complete food (liked for a while) bakers complete again, pets at home frozen meats all varieties (liked with a mixer) bailey was started on bakers complete puppy, then onto butchers puppy alternated with bakers - i like to give them variety - have swapped the complete foods for NUTRO (they both love this) and don't use tins anymore, have replaced trhem with raw chicken wings and still use the pets at home frozen meat - beware the tripe one stinks!!!!!
- By Dexy [gb] Date 04.02.04 21:21 UTC
Wow - you've been through a lot of varieties! My boxer is fussy too - sounds like I'll have to do what you do and give him a variety of food. I must admit he loved the frozen meat you get at the pet shops (tripe etc) but my vet told me not to give him raw meat because of the bacteria risk!!? From what I read I think its the best option.

HI can any one help me has any one  tried the supadog condition? if so for what breed
- By jonelle [gb] Date 30.10.05 23:29 UTC
Hi Katja,
I feed my G.W.P on superdog condition and he thrives on it.
He is in excellent condition and loves the rich gravy that it releases if you add little water.
Have recomended it to breeder friend who couldnt keep weight on her fussy dogs and they love it too.

Hi jonelle
I have started one of my collies on this food as she had been scratching for weeks on end, i had bathed her and put spot on on her, but it made no change to her so i went to every shop and feed store that i knew of and a majority of the recomended supadog condition and it does seemed to have setteled down. I have spoken to quite a few people and they said that it not a good food, but i have seen a big change and i do beg to differ, so i was glad to hear that someone else was just as pleased with the results as i was.
                                                                                                 thank you katja

>yes at half the price is it half as good???????????????? only time will tell!!!!<

To be honest, it might be half the price of James Wellbeloved, but Superdog Sensitive suits my two dogs far better - they are a 10 month ond puppy and a 10 year old bitch who's kidneys are not good. I did feel a little guilty at first because it's so much cheaper than many 'premium' brands. My friend changed her 11 adult shar-pei on to it about 18 months ago and they look better, eat less and poo less than they did on the James Wellbeloved she fed before. Her dogs are regularly shown and win at Champshow level. I actually changed my dogs onto it from James Wellbeloved out of sheer desparation (puppy with diahorrea and scurfy skin and a sudden weight loss and lack of energy in my old girl). After seeing how well my friend's dogs looked on Superdog I gave it a try and never looked back as both my dogs are thriving on it.

I can't vouch for the other varieties as I personally haven't tried them and I'm not a fan of food with wheat, soya or maize, but the Sensitive is as good as many Lamb & Rice diets out there.

Hi, All our American Cockers are fed on SuperDog Sensative expecially my dog as he has a very sensitive stomach, i have found this food brilliant and he has not had any bad setbacks! He does win at shows in hard limit classes at the moment!, it costs us £15 i think for a 15kg sack, it has no wheat or gluten or rice i dont think which is good for our dog as well as we did think he had a intolerence to this and seems alot better scince we have stayed away from products containing this.

I have a GSD dog - Zak (2 1/2 years old rescue) who is very active & I have been trying to get weight on him since he was 5 months old. The vet tells me he is fine, but I have always been able to feel his backbone & he looks slim compared to all the other GSD'S at obedience & agility. Now at last I am getting somewhere. I have tried all the foods under the sun, he has the typical GSD tummy, can be very loose, the more food I gave him (especially high protein)the more came out the other end! I have him on 'Burgess Supadog Lamb & Rice Sensitive' at the moment. It seems to be doing the trick, he is getting a bit fussy, but I mix it with a small amount of pilchards or Tuna in hot water to make a gravy. It is reasonably priced compared to a lot of the other premium foods, but contains a good amount of lamb (26%), it is maize, beef, egg & dairy free. I don't want him fat, just to look fit & well. He is long haired & his coat has also been very poor probably due to his bad start in life. He still has lots of fluffy puppy hair on his flanks & his top coat is very sparse. I am hoping that the fish will improve that. I think it is a good food for the price.

Hi, i feed my  bullmastiff on supa dog sensitive and her stools have never been better, she was on beta but her stomach would bloat and she'd be really gasy.  Bloat common in the breed i thought i'd change her to james well beloved, the gas went but the bloating never and her stools were formed but not right, but she has been great on this now and she looks really well.  So she's staying on it.

Warm regards Susan

Hi. Just wanted to tell you of my experience with the Burgess Supadog range. My gundogs all work very hard all winter and in the past I have fed various makes including Beta and Eukanuba (with minced tripe) and keeping any condition on them has always been a nightmare. Crufts has never been an option as it's too soon after the end of the season. Since changing to Burgess I have been delighted with the results, my dogs hold condition a lot better and their coats are fantastic. My puppies look as good as they have on other brands and more importantly I'm still getting good low hip scores.
Burgess is also one of the few family run companies left, and if I phone them they know who I am and ask after individual dogs which I hink is pretty rare these days!
